Luke had excused himself and went to the bathroom just moments before, and since then Skylar had been laying flat on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. She was confused, to say the least, and her mind was racing once again with all of the possibilities and alternate ways that what just happened between her and Luke could have happened.
She thought that it was a mistake, of course, because with Skylar everything that she ever did felt like a mistake. She didn't know what had come over her when she kissed Luke, because just a little while before she had gotten herself all worked up over the fact that he probably didn't like her anyway. It was clear that Luke had at least some feelings for Skylar now, but that didn't change how she felt. She was still terrified that something bad was going to happen, and things with Luke weren't going to turn out the way she wanted.
Skylar was also scared about Luke leaving her when they get back home, despite his promise to stay. She had no way to tell if he was telling the truth or not, for she had only met him that day, and it was too soon to figure out if Luke was someone she could trust or not. She really wanted to believe him when he said he wasn't going to leave, but she was having a hard time doing soon. But it wouldn't come as a surprise if he did leave her, because that was normal. All Skylar's life she's just been hurt and disappointed, it wouldn't make any difference if Luke did the same.
Either way, kissing Luke felt good. Almost too good.
Skylar was stirred from her thoughts by her own phone ringing from inside of her backpack, that was still lying on the floor. She immediately jumped up from the bed, her first thought being that it was her mother calling, even though it was still late in Australia and she was probably still asleep. Skylar fumbled for her phone anyway, desperately trying to reach it in time.
The phone call wasn't from her mother, but rather from Caitlyn, a girl that Skylar knew from school only because they were lab partners the year before. Skylar liked to consider her and Caitlyn friends, but she wasn't sure how Caitlyn felt about their relationship. Skylar didn't have many friends, anyway, because between all of the bullying she went through in middle school and the way she completely shut down after her parents divorce, Skylar didn't get out much.
Skylar answered the phone, rolling her eyes as she did. It's not that she didn't like Caitlyn, she just wished that she had called at a different time. Maybe when she wasn't so worried about her mom, or maybe when there wasn't an attractive boy jacking off in the bathroom.
"Hello?" Skylar asked, and Caitlyn practically squealed in her ear.
"Skylar! You didn't tell me you liked 5SOS!" Caitlyn yelled. Skylar almost laughed, what was a five sauce?
"I...don't?" Skylar questioned, looking around the room. At that moment she hoped that Luke would come back out, just so she had an excuse to hang up the phone.
"Then why are you hanging out with Luke Hemmings?" Caitlyn scoffed, sounding slightly annoyed with Skylar. She probably thought that Skylar was just lying to her, and trying to hide the fact that she actually was friends with Luke. That wasn't true, she didn't feel the need to hide it, but Skylar was just being Skylar; confused as always.
"Oh, him." Skylar nodded to herself, finally figuring out what five sauce meant. It was short for 5 Seconds of Summer. "He's just a - wait, how did you know that?"
"Uh, Skylar, you're everywhere! There's pictures of you and Luke all over twitter and a new video just went up on the TMZ website of the two of you running away from paparazzi." Caitlyn explained, and Skylar felt her stomach lurch. She was well aware of the paparazzi chasing down Luke, but not of the fact that they were focusing on her too.
