You hadn't exactly had high expectations for this dance, and that had only been proven when you arrived. Whereas all of your friends had dates, just like the majority of the time, you didn't, and you were never sure how to act because of it. Whether it was house parties, going to clubs...needless to say, you weren't particularly skilled in social situations, and that often left you on the outskirts. You weren't angry at your friends as they danced with their dates, and they tried to do what they could to include you. For the most part, you smiled as if it didn't bother you—as if it didn't matter—and wandered around the outskirts of the room, drinking punch and seeing what food was on offer. That didn't mean to say you weren't affected by it, however. Because as much as you smiled at everyone around you, it still stung at the idea that no one had wanted to go with you, and that you could only sit on the side lines and watch like always.
Why your friends insisted you should come to parties like this, you had never known. Though you knew they wanted you to have a good time and meet someone, it wasn't about to work, and yet still they bought you outfits and dressed you up, which in a way only made you feel worse. By halfway through the dance, you were leaning against the buffet table, staring at the floor and humming along with the music, wondering whether you should just leave now and head home. It was why you hadn't expected a hand to suddenly grip hold of your arm. Flinging your head up to see what was going on, you saw a boy with long blonde hair grinning at you, only one eye visible with his bangs covering the other. Frowning at what he thought he was doing, you began to protest, only for him to blurt hurriedly,
"Come on, it looks like you need a dance, un!"
Before dragging you from your spot and across the hall. Unable to say anything out of shock, you merely let him pull you onwards, not really understanding what was going on, especially as he didn't head onto the dancefloor to dance with you, like you expected, instead walking around the edge until he let go and you stumbled head first into someone. Immediately backing up, you looked up at just who you had fallen into, and couldn't help but pause. He wasn't what you would called traditionally handsome, but there was definitely something about him that was cute, even with blue skin and gills. He was a lot taller than most of the guys here, and even with a suit on it was clear he was muscular. Automatically feeling yourself go bright red, you had no idea what to say as he questioned as to whether you were alright, but managed a nod, flustered a little at how nice he was being. But noticing he looked a bit uncomfortable himself, not making much eye contact, you began to relax in his easy-going presence, especially as he sighed desperately,
"I'm sorry. My friend saw I was on my own, and for some reason he felt it was okay to drag you over here. You weren't with anyone, were you?"
"No," you blurted quickly, only to realise how you sounded and forced yourself to slow down, going on afterwards, "I was on my own as well."
"Uh...I'm Kisame Hoshigaki, by the way," he spoke up quietly a moment later, and smiling sweetly at his awkwardness, knowing exactly how he felt, you replied softly,
"(y/n)."
Though at first, he grinned at you with your introduction, it soon slipped off, his gaze drifting back down to the floor as things went silent. A little nervous that it might have been something you had done, your smile once again came back as he rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, questioning hesitantly,
"Well, uh...now that you're here...would you like to dance?"
Instantly your smile grew bigger, and though you knew you were blushing again, you nodded and replied happily,
"I'd love to."
Kisame now returned your smile in full, no longer hesitating as he took your hand and led you out onto the dancefloor. Of all things to happen here tonight, this had not been one of them, but as he placed his other hand on your waist, you just seemed to fit into place, and neither of you could seem to stop smiling.
