The whole room felt stiff. Everyone was talking and having a good time, but I'm not use to people. There was probably 120 people that I could see. King Owen, Queen Leah, and Prince Damion were standing by their seats of the banquet. They were talking to whoever talked to them. Among the crowd talking to them was my mother.

Letting out a sigh, I pretend to smooth out a wrinkle on my blue dress. Most of the people are probably trying to get on the royal families good side to increase their social ranking.

"It's so sad, isn't it?" I blinked out of my thoughts and turned to the girl who spoke, "They're surrounding the royal family like dogs begging for treats."

"While it may not be nice to say, I have to agree." I chuckled, "Unfortunately, my mother is among them."

"My father is in there too." We looked at each other before we began to giggle, "I'm Evelyn by the way."

"Maya." I greeted shaking her hand.

"Why are you alone over here? It's not normal for a lady to be alone in a room full of people." She reminded me. I rolled my eyes and leaned against the pillar.

"Well, you can't evaluate a room very well from the center of a crowd." I explained with a smirk.

"So, you're going to bail if something happens? Smart, maybe I should follow you if that happens."

I smiled then began to look around at everyone. Not to far away I saw a group of three girls whisper and giggle before they began to examine each other's dresses.

"I have a feeling we're not having a normal, lady like conversation." Evelyn sighed, sounding slightly upset.

"You can go talk with them if you want." I assured her. No one's forcing her to talk to me. She looked at me before shaking her head.

"Absolutely, not. I never said that I wanted a normal conversation." she laughed. We paused though when a trumpet sounded. The people who were in the center of the room moved out of the way for the servants, who were bringing in large tables.

"Sons and daughters at one table. Fathers and Mothers at the other." The King ordered. I glanced at Evelyn before we rushed to the end of the closest table.

"Please allow me." The guy next to me spoke pulling my seat out. I nodded at him before sitting down. Evelyn sat down across from me. At the main table the Prince stood up.

"First of all, I would like to thank you all for your support. I would also like to thank you all for being here. Now, onto the reason we're all here." The Prince announced, "I have called you all here because some of these loyal kids has a chance to become a part of my Secret Escort. The group if broken into four groups. Swordsmen, Archers, Wizards, and Assassins. I will not decide personally though."

That got a rise out of the crowd. We were all told that the prince would choose the individuals.

"Well, weren't we mislead." The boy next to me muttered. I glared down at the plate of food and the drink that was set before me. Where do these people think they stand, to question the prince like this? I thought they were supposed to be loyal.

"I will not be choosing because the leaders of my father's escort will know who will be best suited to be apart of my secret escort. In fact, they are evaluating all of you at this very moment. Now, let's all enjoy our meal and the rest of the evening."

At the end of his speech everyone began to eat and talk.

"To be honest, I wanted the prince to pick us." the guy next to me muttered.

"I think it's better this way." Evelyn replied. I nodded in agreement.

"If the leaders are choosing then they'll know what to look for. People they are sure will protect Prince Damian." I added then stayed quiet for the rest of the meal. When everyone was finished eating, the servants moved the tables out of the way, so people could begin to dance along to the music.

"You know, I wonder when we'll be chosen." Evelyn blurted out of the blue. Clearly, she was trying to get me to talk. I let out a breath while shaking my head. For now, I need to focus on enjoying the evening.

"I'm not sure. Isn't it normal to get a summoning if the royal family wants you for something?" I questioned then felt a cold chill run down my back. Glancing around, I noticed there was a glass door behind us that was cracked open. I know for a fact that the door wasn't open a little while ago. While I want to believe the castle guards did their job right, dad told me that there are small holes in their system that can allow invaders to enter. If it is someone who snuck in, I imagine they'll stay with in the shadows of the room. First though, I need to get Evelyn out of this area.

"I think one of those boys wants to dance with you." I chirped glancing at a group of men across the room to get her to look at them. Thankfully it worked.

"Are you sure? Don't you want to dance with someone?" She asked sounding concerned.

"No, I'm fine. You go on and enjoy yourself." I encouraged. She nodded then raced off. With her gone, I crept over to the door and closed it. Now who, or what, ever snuck in is stuck in here until someone catches them
