I was falling in the air towards the waves underneath me. My eyes were open wide, and my screams were choked by my throat. I was falling. Falling to my death.
At the corner of my eyes I saw something blur past me. The blur stopped for a second and I gasped inwardly. The blur froze and the person revealed themselves.
It was Edward.
But it also wasn't. His golden eyes were pitch black and he was floating- no, running- to catch me. He had his arms out, ready to catch me and I gasped as he unfroze and caught me.
I laid my head against his chest and I couldn't hear his heart beating. He was cold and stone-like; I would consider him dead, but he was moving and talking. Nothing alive could have no heart beat and still has the ability of movement and speech.
I woke up as Edward ran into the woods, the trees blurring at a speed I couldn't comprehend. He was running, yet everything was crystal clear in my dream. He was running at a speed no human can ever muster, and that only hardened my beliefs that he wasn't human.
I stretched my arms and smacked my lips together. My throat and lips felt dry and my stomach rumbled in hunger. I went to get out of bed when the door opened.
"Good morning, sweetie," Esme said as she walked in, carrying a tray of toast and a glass of orange juice.
"Morning," I greeted as she put the tray down on the bed. She helped me sit upright and I couldn't help but notice how cold her touch actually was. Whatever she was, Edward was one too. I bet everyone in this family is something inhuman. It unnerved me. What if they only let me come into their home so they could hurt me, just like Charlie. But this time maybe I could end up dead.
Esme left and I picked up my food. I suddenly lost my appetite and I barely touched my toast and only drank a little bit of orange juice to quenched my thirst. Esme came back after ten minutes and didn't say anything as she took the tray away. She left and didn't return for the rest of the day.
I didn't move from my position all day. I thought of several things, like school. When will I go back? Would everyone know that I'm living with the Cullens now? Would they know about Charlie? Or would they continue on torturing me like they do every day? But, more importantly, would the Cullens soon follow them?
The sun was setting when the door opened and Carlisle came in. He left the door open and Edward leaned in the doorway.
"Hello, Bella," Carlisle greeted as he sat at the edge of the bed.
"Hello," I said back as I sat up, back against the bed's headboard.
"I need to discuss something with you. It's about school."
I nodded, letting him know that I understood. "What about it?"
"Well, I think you should go back tomorrow. Don't worry, Edward and the others will protect and look after you."
I frowned, a question pondering in my mind. "But how am I supposed to get my work and books? They're at..." I trailed off, not even sure what I'd call the place I'd lived in for my entire life. I couldn't call it home as it's not safe and I didn't want to say his name.
I lifted my gaze from my hands to Carlisle and saw him smile sadly. "You could go back tomorrow after school to get your books."
Before I could speak, Edward stiffened and his eyes turned black as he spat his words out angrily. "Are you insane?! She is not going back there!"
"Edward," Carlisle said in a calm tone. "Did you really think that I'd let her go alone? You'll go with her."
Edward's eyes returned to gold as he pursed his lips. "Fine, I'll go with her. But if he appears, then I won't be responsible for my actions."
