My mouth fell open as his singular word washed over me. I was right; Edward and his entire family were vampires. The reason why they were so cold-skinned and had no heart beat, have inhuman strength and beauty was because they were vampires.

Vampires who drink human blood.

But they can't drink human blood. They were too nice and good-natured; I just couldn't imagine them killing and drinking from humans. Plus, why would they let me, a weak human, stay with them and haven't tried to kill me? It made no sense whatsoever.

Their eyes were golden. I have always expected something gold to be pure and angelic. The attacker's eyes were burgundy; which I always associated as evil and dangerous. I just don't see any of the Cullens killing humans, especially gold-hearted Carlisle, mother-like Esme and pixie Alice.

"We're vampires, but we don't hurt humans," Edward said cautiously.

I glanced up at him. "Then what do you hunt?"

He smiled forcefully. "We hunt animals. We hunt animal blood so we don't become the soulless monsters which we are."

My head jerked up. "Soulless? You think you're soulless?"

"Of course. I'm a vampire; soulless is part of the occupation." I would have laughed if he didn't sound so serious.

"Edward," his name rolled off my tongue easily. "No one as kind or as caring as you couldn't have no soul. It wouldn't make any sense. Everyone has a soul. We just decide how we use it and treat it."

He titled his head to the side. "You're taking this extremely well."

I shrugged. "What? It's not like you're going to hurt me. You're still the same person."

"But I'm not," he argued. "I'm a monster."

"No, you're not. Charlie's a monster for what he has done to me. You haven't hurt me like he has. He might be human, but you've treated me with kindness and accepted me into your home. You and your family have given me more than Charlie has. You've given me a safe home, an escape from Charlie, a car, a phone. But, most importantly, you've given me the chance to trust someone again."

"Trust? You trust us?"

I stared into his eyes. "You haven't given me a reason to not trust you."

I watched as he signed and pinched the bridge of his nose between his finger and thumb. He squeezed his eyes shut, a few lines appearing in his forehead as he frowned. "This is so wrong."

I regarded him for a long moment, listening to his breathing and how his frown became deeper as the seconds ticked by. The silence was awkward and I couldn't handle for much longer. Plus, I needed some answers.

"Alice saw this, didn't she?" I whispered.

Edward removed his digits from his nose and opened his eyes. "Yes. She saw it at last minute. The vampire didn't smell you until a minute before I arrived. I was afraid I'd be too late."

"But you weren't."

"But I could've been. One more second and I would have been too late."

The silence after his words were deafening. I was looking at everything except Edward, worried how he would react. I knew he was waiting for a rational reaction. A normal person would have screamed and ran away when they found out about vampires and the Cullens being a part of a dangerous and mythical species. But they and especially Edward should know by now that I am not a normal human being. I won't run away, screaming. If anything, it intrigued me even more to know about the Cullens and vampires.
