Christine could not believe what she was hearing. Her father must be joking, right? What was he saying? Nothing that he was saying was making any sense here. Christine was in shock.Could what her father was saying really be true? It would explain a lot of stuff in her life. She never really felt like this place was her home. She never really fit in with the other kids and people when she was growing up. And her mother, could she truly, along with her twin brother really be alive and living in a far off land? Could she really be a princess? Oh, my head she sighs I think I am going to be sick everything is starting to spin, and with that, she fainted.

It was a good thing that Christine's father was standing next to her or Christine would have landed on the floor instead of in his arms. I told you to sit down my dear, her father said.It is a good thing that I caught you. Now let me get you a cold cloth for your head and a glass of wine, you are going to need it before the day is through.

Now hunny, I meant to tell you all this some time ago but I really did not know how. I mean, how does one go about telling your only daughter that since before she was born that her entire life was going to be a lie? It is really not going to be all that bad you know? Just think of it, you finally get to meet your mother and brother after all these years. I know that I told you that they were dead but I truly had no other choice. You will see once we go back home which is going to be sooner than later.

Now we must pack. Only clothes that are of the best quality will do where we are going and we must hurry we should have been there ten days ago so your mother could get you ready. Now we have to hurry, hurry, hurry.

Christine lay there on the couch sipping her wine not believing what she was hearing.Father, you have to stop and slow down. None of what you are telling me is making any sense. How can my mother and brother be alive? and me a princess, yea right. This is some kind of joke, isn't it? Christine walked over to where her father was kneeling, he was trying to find something in the bottom of the hope chest that once belonged to her mother. Finally, he stood up and handed Christine a box and a very, very old album.  What is this? Christine asked. These two things will answer all of your questions and hopefully, you will then understand why we must leave this place and soon.

Christine took the box and the album and sat back down on the couch. She opened the box first. Inside was a lifetime worth of letters addressed to her. There was a birth certificate that stated in bold letters twin A= girl and another one that said twin B = boy both had the status of alive to Christine's dismay. She continued to look through the box and she was surprised at what she saw. She saw little bittie booties, postcards with pictures and a very small dress, her's she assumed. She carefully put everything back in the box and picked up the album, it was very old. There were pictures of kings and queens and princes and princesses going all the way back to the 1800's. Toward the back of the album, there was a picture of a family, a man, a woman and two children that appeared to be the same age. Christine knew without a doubt that this was her family. Her mother and brother were indeed alive and like it or not she was indeed a princess.

As Christine continued to look through the album she noticed a small envelope stuck between two pictures, and it was addressed to her."My dearest daughter, by the time that you read this letter you will be all grown up and a beautiful woman. No doubt you have many questions and I will do my best to answer them for you. Many years ago before you were born a pact was made between our family and that of our rival that when our daughter and their son turned 23 years old they both would marry each other and therefore the war between our families would stop. I know that your life has been difficult especially thinking all these years that I and your brother were dead. Please do not be cross with your father for we made the decision together. Your father has raised you the best that he could, and from what he has told me he did a really good job raising you on his own. You have turned out to be a very beautiful young lady. Know that the decision to send you away was not a light one that we made. We wanted you to have as normal a life as you could before you had to do your duty. Your duty my dear is very important to our family.

Your immediate return is needed for the war here has taken its toll on the land and its people. We must put a stop to the war before it completely destroys our land and our lives. I know that your heart does not love the one you are betrothed to but sometimes we must put what we want aside and do what is right for others. I hope that you will one day understand our decision to do this.Until the time we meet again know that I love you and look forward to seeing you again. Gods speed my daughter. All my love mother.

Christine was in shock. She could not believe what she had just read. Her life as she knew it was all a lie. What was she going to do? She had just met and fallen in love with the man of her dreams. How could she tell him that she couldn't see him anymore because she had to go marry somebody she never met before so that her family and his family would stop killing each other. What a mess her life was turning out to be.
