Chapter Five

I figured it was about time I ask about Florida. "Mom and dad, I have a question!" I yell from the stairway. "What is it sweetie?" My mother asks. "What is it?" My father also says. "I was wondering if I can go to Florida with Lewis." I said to them. "Who else is going to be there?" My father says. "I think just Lewis." I tell him. "You think?" He questions me. "I know." I say in hope that it was just going to be us. "Then I guess that is fine, but you are going to have to say in really good contact with us because you are states away." My father says cautiously. "You definitely have to say in contact with us and I am going to have to have a talk with you since you are going with a guy." My mother says. "Fine." I tell her and sigh. I know what talk this is going to be.

I grab out my phone and text Lewis, 'Look who is going to Florida with you?' He replies to me, 'You?' I then look at the message and send another one, 'Of course! But, I am going to have to call my parents every so often.' He probably thinks my parents are overprotected, and they basically are. 'That is better than not coming!' He texts me. 'Yes!' I reply to his text.

I am too excited to go to bed. I stay up till about midnight when I finally realize that I should just fall asleep and then get ready for Florida tomorrow.

The next morning, I surprisingly don't get a good morning message from Lewis. I feel a little sad about that, but maybe he just isn't up yet. That would be a little unusual, but who knows! I still do what I normally do. I get dress and do my hair then I walk downstairs and yell, "What is for breakfast?" Today I get a reply from my mother saying, "Cereal." That must mean one thing, my dad isn't home.

"Where is dad?"  I ask my mother. "He is out looking for a new job." My mother replies to me and grabs a bowl for me and takes out the milk. "What happened?" I ask her. "He needs a new job. He found out that he could be getting fired." My mother says sadly. It is ashame that my father needs a new job because he just found a job that he loved and that he was actually focused on. This isn't a good sign because now he probably will start getting drunk again and do dumb things. That was how he ended up in jail.

I eat my cereal while just staring at the wall. I realized tonight I will be going to Florida with Lewis. I need to get packed for the nice weather in Florida, and I need to be prepared for the long flight there. I haven't been on a plane since I was five on my way to live here.

"Your grandparents are here!" My mother screamed. "Great." I say. I love my grandparents, but they fly in every summer to live here for about a month. They get really annoying and always get in my way. These are the grandparents I lived in that apartment with my mom when I was little. That might be a reason why I don't really care for them.

"Come say hi to them!" My mom yells as she opens the door. "Coming." I say and leave the kitchen to go to the door. "Hi grandma." I say as she kisses me. "Hi grandpa." I say as he hugs me. "So nice to see you!" My grandma says as I take their suitcases into the guest room. "Why you are looking older!" My grandpa says. "Yes she is!" My mother adds. "Where is your husband?" My grandma asks my mother. "Looking for a job." My mother replies to her. "Again!" She screams. "Yes, he might be getting fired from the job he has, so he wants to play it safe." My mother replied to that comment.

"Grandma and grandpa, are you hungry?" I ask them as I come down the stairs. "Yes!" My grandma says. "Same." My grandpa adds. "How about cereal?" I ask them. "That will be fine." My grandma and grandpa both say. "Here is the cereals we got." I hold up the two boxes of cereals. "I will take that one." My grandpa says pointing to one of the boxes. "Same." My grandma says nodding. I pour them some cereal and put it on the table. "It is on the table when you are ready." I tell them and head up to my bedroom.

I begin to pack my bags for Florida because at nine o'clock tonight I will be leaving with Lewis. I am glad that I won't have to spend the whole summer with my grandparents. Now, my mom is stuck watching over them and bringing them around town.

I walk downstairs and here the worst conversation. "Does Adalynn have a boyfriend?" My grandma was asking my mother. "She actually is leaving with some guy to go to Florida tonight." My mother responded to my grandma. "You are letting her go with a guy to Florida!" My grandpa screamed at my mother. "What is going on?" I question them as I walk into the room. "You are going to Florida with some guy?" My grandma asks. "Yes." I reply. "We need to give you the talk." She then says. "That is what mom said!" I yelled. "We will right now!" My grandma and mother just said. "Fine." I respond to that. My grandpa walked to go in the kitchen and eat his cereal.

"I think you can handle this yourself." My grandma says to my mother and gets up and goes to eat her cereal too. "How should I start?" My mother says to me. "Just get to the point, I already know everything." I tell my mother.

"Never have sex right away, and make sure it is in a comfortable spot. It is never good to just have sex right on a rock. Remember this!" She tells me and I look away. "This is just gross!" I tell her. "Also, I went to the store last night and bought you some birth control, start taking this right now." She tells me. "Oh, and make sure you guys use condoms, I really don't want any mistakes like you were!" She adds. "I am not going to get pregnant!" I yell at my mother. "Just in case." She sighs.

"That it?" I question. "For now!" My mom jokes and I leave the room. That was a very awkward conversation.
