Warnings: mentions of death
Author Note:
- This was loosely based off the first chapter of The Fever Code, so credits to James Dashner for the overall idea.
- All imagines will include Rosa so I wanted to tell a little bit about her. She's a random character I made up and put in the series. The image above is what I picture her to look like. Thanks for reading :)

It snowed the day they killed the girl's parents.

An accident, they said much later, but she doubted this greatly. How do you kill someone on accident?

The snow came before they did, falling from the gray sky. It was surprising, but wonderful, she remembered. Hannah wanted to run outside and play in it, but she knew it was dangerous. No one was allowed to go outside. Her parents didn't even pay attention to the weather miracle that was happening or how happy it made their daughter. They sat silently in the corner of the room, staring at nothing on the wall.

Both were infected with the Flare, the deadly and crazed disease that resulted from the sun flares. Hannah hadn't shown any symptoms at all, making her parents believe that she was somehow immune to the virus.

She watched the snow falling outside their window until a bang on the door interrupted her happy thoughts. Her parents still sat frozen, not reacting to the sound at all, but Hannah did. She was scared, not knowing who was in charge of making the noise or what they wanted. Hannah knew it was no use to ask her parents if she should answer it because they wouldn't respond. So she didn't bother to say anything at all.

She ran to the basement of the house, hoping the people on the other side of the door didn't see her and would just go away. But as soon as she got to the bottom of the stairs, she heard a rush of noises. The door slammed open. Loud, angry voices. Heavy, dreadful footsteps.

Then the next noise made Hannah's heart sink to her stomach. Two gunshots.

She tried to hide, but it was no use. There was nowhere to hide. Even if there was, they would probably find her. The strangers pounded down the stairs and grabbed her before she could even process what was happening. She screamed, thrashing her arms and legs around, but the man carrying her was too strong. Up the stairs and out the door they went, leaving Hannah's mom and dad dead in their living room.

The next few months she went through blood tests, classes, and was given a new name. Rosa. They forced her to use it, even though she knew she would never forget her real name. Hannah. The strangers told her she was special. That she could help them find a cure for the Flare, which Hannah did want to help with. She couldn't help the guilt that swarmed her heart because she left her parents upstairs when she knew something bad was going to happen. She had killed her parents. Hannah knew she would never get over it, so she knew she had to help other people as much as she could.

But other than the daily classes and tests, she had a lot of free time. She was stuck in her room with a pile of books, which she did enjoy reading sometimes. Hannah had begun to feel numb, neither happy or sad. It just felt like she was living a life she wasn't ready for. A life not meant for her. But she had no choice.

She liked to peek out of the small window located on the door to her room when she wasn't reading or thinking. She never really saw anything exciting go by until years later. Something that changed her miserable life forever.
