Chapter 18
Later that evening, there couldn’t been the worst thanksgiving dinner he had ever had. And there was just something that constantly annoyed Riley all the time. Like how the family was warming up to Cody, who they just barely met but act like they’ve known him for like forever.
It was just bothering him that they’ve took noticed of their new guest instead of talking annual family gossips on the table (which was also as bad and as boring like listening to lectures).
But as bad and awkward for him to take all of these, he just sat there, eating robotically, not minding the taste as long as there was food inside his mouth, eyeing the sight of the relatives who were all swarmed up on Cody.
Lola’s parents adored him, he was acting all gentleman and Riley swore he threw up a little bit since he knew he was just being all over polite to them that it wasn’t actually fit for his personality. He usually wasn’t like this. Really.
He knew they were all hogging up on him because he was just attractive –okay fine, he admits he’s hot, of course, knowing these people like on his entire life, he knows that they were all on him because he was something new.
Cody was like a giftwrapped present to the whole family.
Then there was something that caught Riley off guard when someone just mentioned their relationship –quite asking clarification on what their relationship was, maybe; friends? Classmates? Acquaintances?
He felt his palm sweat a little bit as he was about to say that they weren’t on good terms right now, but he definitely wasn’t going to say or even that they were ex-boyfriends.
No. Nope.
The possible horrible conversation turned out something like this: “We’re friends,” Riley just said blandly.
“Very close friends, actually,” Cody cuts in and Riley couldn’t help but to travel his eyes at him at his response.
Lola’s mom, Lucy arched her brows at them, completely surprised. “Wow, really? That’s really great!”
The other relatives smiled and agreed which he thinks it was very strange and there was Lola, who was just staring at them with mildly entertained look. And Riley thinks he was just offended by that.
“What’s so great about it?” He didn’t mean seem to sound rude.
“He’s my best-friend.”
Oh, wow.
“I’m sure you both are,” she smiled. “Are you also friends with Cody, Lola?” she asks her.
Her attention was fully caught as she whipped her head towards her mother, she shrugged. “Yeah, sure we are,” although it wasn’t true.
“How long have you been friends? You and Riley?” uncle Jim, Lola’s dad asked.
Riley bit his cheeks inside his mouth, why do they even want to know? It’s not even their business. He wanted to groan, but it seemed like he was being rude in front of the table so he restrained himself.
Cody smiled, “well you might think this is for only a short while, but almost four months, I guess? Isn’t that right, Ry?” he turned to look at him.
Riley just gave him a blank look of disapproval but, “yeah, that’s just how it is.”
He thought Lola might’ve just smothered a laugh somewhere along the conversation.
