"shane, make sure you roll up the ends of your jeans. you'll look more preppy." my mother informed, as she came in with fresh newly ironed clothes to hang in my closet. "style that hair too. we don't want a mess sitting at the table for your father's birthday."

my father was having a huge birthday party that was planned for him. it was going to be at a banquet hall, and only the richest folks of the town were invited. i had on my light plain blue button up with the sleeves rolled up just a bit, beige jeans that were then rolled up, and white/black formal dress shoes. i guess you could say i looked 'nice'.

i attached my watch to my wrist, and ran my hand through my hair before running down the stairs. my father was in his tux, as my mother was in a long red dress that fit her beautiful. my sister stood there in a casual black dress with black high heels that was complimented with a pearl necklace.

oh, how i already dreaded the night....

"go on now, shane. go dance with her!" lily pleaded me, pushing me slightly in the shoulder as I took another bite of my plate of scallops. "i can tell you like her! now, go before someone takes her away!"

i rolled my eyes at my sister until I felt her grab my hand and pull me towards gabbie. she slightly pushed me over in her way, and gabbie flinched as looked up in confusion. when her eyes met with mine, she smiled widely and flipped her hair back. i mentally scoffed, but i knew better than to do it in real life.

"shaney! what a pleasant surprise, would you care to dan-"

she was saying as we got interrupted as my friend, lisa pulled me away towards the dance floor. lisa and i had been friends since grade 1, so we went way back. she knew more about me than anyone else in the whole town. she was practically the sister i never had, and we knew our boundaries with one another so we never tried to date each other. she grabbed my hand and started to slow dance with me in the middle of the dance floor.

"you're lucky i saw what was happening on time. i know you don't like her, am i correct?" she asked with a slight smile on her face.

"when are you not?" i replied, as she just giggled and i swiftly spun her around, grabbing her and pulling her close to me. "thank you, i really didn't want to dance with her."

"no problem! but you own me." she stated, as i nodded in agreement. the song went on for a couple of more minutes, and i departed from lisa to my family table.

"so you're going for the schwartz family now? good choice, they have tons of money so you're able to go that route if you'd like." my father said, taking a sip of his champagne as i gave him a face of disgust.

"it shouldn't matter the amount someone has for me to like them, dad." i argued, as a fresh plate of sea bass was placed in front of me from the server. "besides, we're just friends."
