shane's pov

i threw on my school blazer, fixing my white button up collar and making sure my hair looked fine. lily then suddenly barged into my room, closing the door behind her and locking it. i looked at her in confusion, as she had a smirk on her face.

"you went out last night." she started out, as i just shrugged and nodded. "aren't you grounded?"

"lily, you have tons to learn about our parents still. rule one, don't be scared of them." i informed her, as she just rolled her eyes at me.

"i would be scared of them if they caught me with a poor boy. i saw you with ryland adams last night. you got into joey's car with him and another boy." she grinned, crossing her arms.

"are you stalking me? if so, you seriously need to stop." i scoffed, grabbing my backpack and trying to get out the room but lily blocked the doorway off.

"i'm not stalking you. i saw you walk past my window when you were on the roof. i feel bad for you, you could marry a rich girl but you rather be rude and go off and sneak around with a boy that can't do anything for you." she remarked, rolling her eyes.

"i feel bad for your future husband, because he's going to have such a bitch for a wife. at least ryland isn't spoiled like the rest of the girls in the town, including you." i hissed, as lily narrowed her eyes at me.

lily groaned, and walked out my room as i then walked out behind her. joey's car was waiting outside for me since we decide to just all go to school and that we would go to ryland's afterwards. i got into the backseat, and closed the door behind me only to look up and see that joey looked a bit frustrated and garrett was laughing.

"joey got turned down by mr. daniel." garrett laughed out, as joey just growled at him.

"i thought since i was making him smile last night he'd want to hang out with me, but no he told me he's not into rich white boys like what the fuck does that even mean?" joey said, flustered up a bit.

"he's specifically not into you joey boy." garrett laughed out again, causing joey to slightly hit in the chest.

we drove all the way to the academy and parked it in the student lot. we walked out and all of our classmates came running our way. usually, it was our friends but this time around they brought joey and garrett with them and left me alone with the one and only..

gabbie hanna.

i rolled my eyes, and tried to move past her but she grabbed my wrist. she then started to pull me towards the outside atrium and she sat me down on one of the benches. i stood back up but she shoved me back down lightly. she then sat down next to me as if she would pull me back if i tried to escape again.

"alright, hear me out...okay?" she asked, in a timid voice that i've never heard so i decided to just sit it out.

"what could you possibly want, gabbie? alright, i don't like you." i admitted to her for what seemed like the hundredth time.

"i know, i know you don't like me but can you just at least hang out with me for one night? one night is all i'm asking, and if you don't like it then i'll tell my parents to call off the whole marriage." she spoke, as she looked me dead in the eyes.

"fine, deal. when do you want to hang out?" i asked her, as i heard the school ring for the 10-minute warning that classes were going to start.

"after school today? we can go around to the market if you want? you know, to make up for the date that you missed." she joked, as i just smiled and bit my lip while nodding. "great, see you in the quad afterwards."

"what do you mean you can't come see ryland with us? drew and daniel will be there too and-"

"i know garrett, i just have family meeting today and just tell ryland i'll come by another time." i said, trying not to tell them about my 'date' with gabbie.

"whatever, move room for us." garrett hissed, shoving pass me in frustration.

i growled, and closed my locker and walked towards the quad. i saw that gabbie was sitting near the water fountain as i sat down next to her suddenly. she looked at me and smiled, and she then grabbed my hand and, of course i was a bit uncomfortable, but i realized she was just trying to guide me towards her car.

"want me to drive?" i asked her, as she tossed me the keys over the roof of the car and we got inside.

we made small talk as we drove to the large market place and we parked the car near one of the book stores. gabbie was quick to rush out the car and into the book store since i knew she always loved the smell of new books and the smell that the bookstore always had, it's weird but i had to admit, it smelt really good in there all the time.

"do you know those edgar allan poe poems? i love them." gabbie pointed as she searched the aisles for a book.

"god, you're sick. that one story where he kills that old man because of the glass eye? are you kidding? that made me want to throw up." i admitted, as gabbie just laughed.

"oh, that's tell-tale heart, yeah that one's pretty creepy but still good! i like the raven and annabel lee." she explained, as i just rolled my eyes..

"ugh, literature. do you wanna go down to the little pastry shop?" i asked, as gabbie just pouted by nodded.

we walked down and got a slice of breads with an ice lattes. gabbie and i talked the whole time effortlessly and we talked even about our horrible parents. she even told me some of her secrets that she's never told anyone and i told her some of mine in return. i didn't like gabbie before, but now, she's alright.

"so why do your parents want you to marry me?" i asked her, as she just shrugged and took a sip of her latte.

"both of our fathers grew up together and work together, i mean, i think they just want both of their kids together to carry on a legacy or something." she explained, biting the top of her straw.

"but we don't actually like each other..." i said, as gabbie just sighed with a raise of her eyebrows.

"i mean, i like you. i've always have, and i use to pretend you were my husband when i was like ten. i always pictured us together, but i never wanted it to be forced." she said, as just weakly smiled at her.

"well it doesn't have to be. do you wanna hang out tomorrow night?" i asked her, as i watched her eyes light up with a slight glow.

"that'd be nice."
