•Why do we hold on?•

Here's why (according to google) we want the person we can't have:

Curiosity
The information gap theory was created by George Lowesntein. So essentially, when a situation occurs where we don't get something we want, we let our curiosity get the best of us and we can't help by wonder why.

The chase
People tend to be more satisfied when they get something they've worked hard at. Elite daily reports that your brain gives of dopamine when you're chasing after something you really want, and the longer it takes to get, the more dopamine you release.

Ego
Another reasons why we continue to chase after those we can't have is because people not wanting us back is a huge blow to our ego. We can't stand to be rejected, and when someone tells us no, we just can't seem to wrap our head around it.

Unavailable
The more a person plays hard to get, the more we want them. Elite daily reports that something, or someone, in high demand seems more valuable.

The challenge
We can't help but fall for a little competition. If someone we want is in a relationship, we see it as a contest between us and their significant other.

Self-esteem
When we date someone that other people want, we feel more confident about ourselves.

Expectations
Some people are more giving then others. If we spend a lot of time doing things for someone, we not only expect them to be grateful but to reciprocate it. However, they don't always want to.

Game
Just like how kids are instantly attracted to something their parents said not to do, we are attracted to people we know we can't have. We become obsessed with why it is we can't have them, and spend all our time figuring out ways to get them to fall for us.

Proving someone wrong
When our friends or coworkers taunt us and tell us we'll never get a date with the new guy or girl next door you've been crushing on, we want to prove them wrong.

Were attracted to the unpredictability of the situation
The situation can only go one of two ways. In a study done by Gregory Burns, researchers studied how people's brains reacted to the unpredictability of getting rewards.

Reactions
People were given water during the study. However when they were given juice instead, people were pleasantly surprised, despite the fact that they prefferd the water anyway. It was unexpected so their brains gave of a strong reaction.

Its a fantasy
Even if we know we can't have them we just can't help but fantasise.
