I woke up with a slight headache from last night. What happened last night? I thought to myself as I went to the bathroom to wash my face.
As I brushed my teeth, I remembered that Cherry and I went to BTS's Wings Concert last night. It was my first concert in Seoul and I must say, they are very good at their live performance. The concert was so much fun and BTS performed two new songs, "Not Today" and "Spring Day".
My thoughts about Jimin's pink hair were interrupted by the ringing of my phone. I checked my phone and Oh My God, am I late for class again? I quickly pick up a sweater and my bag before I head out to the door. Phone, checked, purse, checked, keys, checked, lock the doors, checked. My mother always insisted that I check all these things before I leave my rooftop 'apartment'.
I went down and greeted my landlord, Hyo Joo, with a smile, despite the headache and empty stomach that I have. "Y/N, are you late for class again?" she said as I walked past her quickly.
"Not today!" I replied with a smile after thinking about BTS's song. It's true because I still have like 30 minutes before class starts but getting there in like 30 minutes is a bit challenging when the traffic in Seoul is so unpredictable.
---
I reached class just in time before the lecturer walked in. I sat next to Cherry in the class. "Did you comb your hair?" Cherry asked as she gave me a granola bar. "My hair is straight, I don't need to comb it every day." I replied.
Today was our final class as we prepare for our graduation. After class dismissed, Mr. Joe, our lecturer, insisted that all the international students take up a foreign language. As I was making my way to the door, Mr. Joe stopped me and Cherry sprinted as fast as she could, leaving me behind with Mr. Joe.
"Y/N, how are you?" Mr. Joe said.
Small talks. Great.
"I'm fine, Mr. Joe" I replied.
"I know you are keen on graduating as soon as you can and move back to Malaysia, but don't you think a new language is a plus to your resume?" Mr. Joe asked.
I've been in Seoul for 3 years because of this degree and I still have no idea what job I am going to do. My apartment contract is until next year September. Continuing my studies is not a bad idea...
"So? What do you think? Should I sign you up for German, French, or Spanish?" Mr. Joe asked as he watched my reaction.
"Mr. Joe, please give me some time to think about it. I would like to discuss with my parents about this." I replied.
"Alright, just so you know, learning another language wouldn't hurt anyone." Mr. Joe said.
Yeah. It's a plus that I get to speak so many languages because I'm from Malaysia. Mandarin, Cantonese, Bahasa Malaysia, English, Korean.
I texted Cherry who bailed on me when I needed her.
"Where are you?"
"Cafeteria. Got you bibimbap. See you. xoxo" - Cherry
---
"Here you go, your favourite bibimbap and I'm sorry for bailing on you." Cherry said as she looked apologetically.
"Really? You could have just stood by the door or something." I replied while trying to be angry, but to be honest, I was kind of thankful for the one-to-one talk with Mr. Joe. Then again, she shouldn't have left me alone.
"Anyways, last night's concert was so much fun! I still can't believe I went to BTS Wings Tour! Your landlord is so nice to give you the tickets to the concert! AND BTS released a new music video today!" Cherry showed me the video of BTS's "Not Today"
After the video, Cherry went back to her place to pack up as she is going on a cruise with her parents. I went to the career office to check out some job-openings and also some resume writing.
Internship was tough but finding a job is tougher with skills like mine.
I went back home to clean up my room, which has been a mess since the final exams. I stopped by the cafe downstairs which was owned by Hyo Joo.
"Hey sunshine!" beamed Hyo Joo.
The first time we met, she thought I was a bucket of sunshine because of my smile. Ever since then, she would call me 'sunshine' or 'Y/N'. I always enjoyed her company because, well, she reminded me of home in Malaysia. I always thought she was very motherly, that's why I decided to rent her rooftop apartment. She has been so kind to me after so many years of staying with her.
"Unni!" I said as I gave her a hug.
"Someone seems happy to see me." She said as she hugged me.
"Maybe someone wants another favour" said Jihoon. Jihoon is a part-timer working at the cafe.
"Don't be such a jerk, Jihoon. How's last day of lecture? Graduating soon?" She asked.
"Well, I don't know. I need to find a job and talk to my parents about this new language program that the school wants me to enroll in." I replied.
Hyo Joo looked confused for a moment but she soon became bright as if an idea just came to her. "My friend gave me this job opening flyer and it says that they are looking for an interpreter. I think you can give it a shot because you speak so many languages," she said as she gave me the flyer.
"It looks shady thou." Jihoon took the flyer and made some comments about it.
"No harm trying." Hyo Joo said.
I took the flyer home as I said my farewells to Hyo Joo and Jihoon. I let the thought of the job opening settle in my thoughts for a while as I cleaned up my room.
After cleaning up the room, I decided to send my resume to the email on the flyer.
A few minutes later, I received an email telling me to come for an interview at 9AM tomorrow morning.
I ran downstairs to Hyo Joo and told her about the interview. She was so happy and enthusiastic about the interview that she even close the cafe to help me prepare for the interview.
What I did not realise was how much this interview had changed my life in Seoul.
Thank you for reading Chapter 1
Although it's short, I hope you enjoyed it! <3
