Chapter 8

Third Person POV

The sun shined down on the training ground of Class 3-E as the sounds of combat and commands scattered around the field. Maya was currently sparring with Okuda while waiting for Karasuma-Sensei to check their progress. Maya skillfully dogged Okuda's every attack and was able to quickly land a hit on her. "Your fighting skills improved since we last spared, Maya," Okuda said as she massaged her arms. "I've been training extra hard to catch up to everyone. I hope it will pay off soon," Maya said while wiping her sweat. "Maya, Okuda, your next," Karasuma-Sensei yelled at the two students. Maya and Okuda took a stance and got themselves into a ready position. "GO!" Karasuma-Sensei commanded.

Okuda approached first and tried to get Karasuma-Sensei. Karasuma-Sensei easily dodged the meek girl's attack with simple defense. Maya immediately took two knives and ran to Karasuma-Sensei. Okuda quickly changed sides to give way for Maya, who immediately struck Karasuma-Sensei with her left arm. A little startled from the speed attack, Karasuma-Sensei lost his footing a bit but immediately recovered. Maya proceeded to attack him with both her arms, twirling and twisting to confuse the teacher as to which hand will strike next. Out of pure randomness, Maya quickly switched with Okuda, who continued to attach Karasuma-Sensei. Maya backed up from the fight as Okuda and Karasuma-Sensei continued to spar in close range. 

Maya suddenly ran from a distance with great speed and immediately jumped above Okuda to strike Karasuma-Sensei from the top. Maya rotated her body and gave Karasuma-Sensei a mid-air spinning roundhouse kick. Karasuma-Sensei blocked Maya's kick but accidentally grabbed her ankle and flung her too far. This causes Maya to be suspended higher in mid-air. Everyone stopped and stared in shock as Maya was in mid-air. Then, out of reflex, landed on the ground with her feet, tumbling a bit, and immediately started charging Karasuma-Sensei again. Maya ran to Karasuma-Sensei and prepared both of her knives. As she was about to strike, Karasuma-Sensei held her wrist and pinned her down; chest first. "Nice try, but not today," Karasuma-Sensei said, letting go of Maya and offering her a hand.

Maya sighed in disappointment and accepted Karasuma-Sensei's hand. "Maya, what the actual fuck is that?" Sugino said in astonishment. "Dude, were you always that good?" Maehara asked, completely dumbfounded. "I-" Maya said, feeling insulted, " Chinese garter champion, who can't jump? Impossible," Maya dusted the dirt off her uniform and gave Okuda a high five for doing great. The bell started to ring, and Karasuma-Sensei dismissed us for our break. The class started talking about how cold Karasuma-Sensei is and how it was impossible to land a single hit. "Maya was close, though. Damm, still can't believe you pulled that off," Maehara said as he rested his elbow on Maya's shoulder. "Boo, of course, I'd catch up to all of you. Kinda sad if I didn't," Maya replied to Maehara's comment. As soon as Karasuma-Sensei reached the top of the stairs, he was greeted by Takaoka-Sensei.

Maya's POV

Maehara took his elbow off of me and went to Isogai. Everyone paid attention to something or someone on the top of the stairs that led to the classroom. I looked at that man in disgust, Takaoka. "Hey! I'm Akira Takaoka. I'll be assisting Karasuma as of today," he said in a charismatic voice. The class decided to approach the new teacher, but I was having none of it. "You there! Help yourself with some sweets! I didn't break my wallet for these to stay on display!" He said to me. I gave him an equally fake smile, just like what he's doing to my classmates. "Is it really ok for me to take one?" I asked humbly. He gave a big nod, and I immediately took what it seemed like a lemon cupcake. I ate the cupcake, trying not to shove this up to his ass. He laughed and conversed with the other students. I looked at Karasuma-Sensei and saw him peaking out of the door to the building.

It was around 4:30 pm, and Karasuma-Sensei and I just finished our one and one training session. We were sitting on the stairs to catch my breath and for him to give out any useful tips to improve on. "Karasuma-Sensei, what do you think about the new teacher?" I asked him, gulping water down to replenish myself. "He's very charismatic, so I think he'd make a good teacher for the class," he answered me. I sighed at his comment, 'For a grown-ass man, he still gets slightly insecure,' I thought. "Judging from your expression, it seems like you have doubts about my answer," he said. "I don't trust him one bit. Call it my intuition," I replied to him, " I trust that you are the perfect teacher for us," I re-tied my ponytail and rose from the stairs. "You're a very genuine teacher, Karasuma-Sensei. What the class needs right now is not flattery, but actual lessons, no matter how harsh it may seem," I told him and left to change.
