BACKSTORY
Alex was born in 1896, in the United States of America. He lived with his mother, his father, and his younger sister there, though his father came from England. His family did not have a lot of money, although they weren't poor. They lived simple lives as farmers.
Hopefully, one day Alex thought he would grow up to become a scientist. He loved maths and numbers. He often found himself sneaking into the local bookshop to look for new scientific books to study. Though he lived in America, he often found himself reading books translated to English by many Europeans. Through this, he ended up picking up on mathematical conversions from metric to imperial and from Fahrenheit into Celsius.
His family took a boat over to England in the fall of 1912 during the winter, when Alex's grandmother died. She was the last of his father's family and England, and finally the last of his family outside of those he lived with.
As it turns out, his grandmother had spent all her fortune, except for roughly $500 (in modern USD), which the family used in April to buy tickets back to America. All of the rest of her money was to be donated to charity, in accordance with her will. Impoverished, the family took home, voyaging third class on the magnificent Titanic.
There was a boy on the ship Alex fancied. Once his sister caught the two, a little to close to each other. Confused, she ended up telling Alex's father. His father was very torn, as a religious man who simply wanted the best life for his son. With nowhere to run, Alex was beaten for his sins. In turn, Alex knocked his father unconscious, screaming in his face, and belittle his sister for telling his family.
He did not get to say good-bye to any of them before the ship sank. He was the old one who made it out alive, without any money to return back to their farm.
It was two days after the ship sank that the Shadow came for him.
