BACKSTORY
Jared was born in 1894 on a farm in Georgia. His grandfather worked on the Underground Railroad, and prior to his death he made sure Jared knew the importance of loving his neighbor, and understood the necessity of freedom.
Jared liked the peaceful farm work. He loved lying in the grass, and laughing with his two brothers as they worked on the field.
His younger brother died of polio at age six, when Jared was only 12. From then on, he wanted to help people.
He began by helping the animals. A quick study, he learned how to help them when they were sick, and how to properly take care of them. Eventually, he learned how to stitch wounds, and bandage those who'd been injured.
Then he met Katherine, who worked on a neighboring farm. She was kind, and full of laughter. She loved all the jokes in the world, and didn't seem to care for a thing. No one could tell her no; she was both passionate and determined, but never did a sour word pass from her lips. Jared admired her for that. He admired her for a lot of things.
Unfortunately, they could never marry. Their love was exchanged in many secrets, over two years. He hoped when he turned 18 they could flee to Canada. Though it wasn't necessarily safe, it was legal. Jared's parents had saved up for this though Katherine's parents had some reservations.
The plan got more intense when Jared's older brother the only one left, died. Brunt at the stake since he was caught with another man.
When they found out Katherine was pregnant, there was less time. Unfortunately, two of the recent farm workers hired on found out, and beat the two of them.
He was arrested before he could get Katherine out safely, and though her siblings were there to help her, she and her child died that night.
The shadow came for Jared in his jail cell before dawn.
