8. FIRST Time

The next morning, Manik got ready to go to Nandini's house as they are supposed to go for selecting engagement rings.

Shobhana opened the door when the bell rang and it was Manik as expected. He bent to touch her feet and she blessed with a smile.

"Beta..Nyonika jii didn't come...??" She asked while giving him coffee.

"Ahh..Nahi Maa...Mom is busy with calling guests and some other preparations..." He answered and was looking for Nandini.

She too understood that he was searching for Nandini, so she herself called her. Nandini came down in a light green salwar kameez and wished him good morning with a little smile to which he reciprocated.

After they had breakfast, they started for a jewelry shop. Shobhana got a call from office while they are on the way.

"Hello.....I kept the file there only....No no wahi hoga....Please check properly...........No.....I can't come now...Please try to understand.........ohh....Acha theek hai...." She said these and cut the call.

"Manik beta..." She called slowly while he was driving.

"Jii Ma..." He responded.

"Wo...baath yeh hai ki...." She hesitated to say.

"Maa...What happened....?? Any problem...??" He asked being concerned while Nandini was silent all the time.

"Wo...I have to go to office....There is some problem..and it's urgent..." She said slowly being hesitant.

"Ohh...No problem Maa...I'll drop you.." He said and was about to take U-turn to drop her at office.

"Arey nahi nahi beta.....See my office is exactly in the opposite direction...and it'll be late if you come to drop me and then we go for shopping...So...If you don't mind...You both go to select rings, I'll finish that work and will join you..." She gave the solution making Nandini shock.

"But Maa...How can we...without you..??" Even Manik asked.

"Arey....Rings will be worn by you only na...You only will select..Not a big deal...Ok..?? I'll leave now..." She said.

"Are you sure Maa...??" He asked again.

"Yes Beta...I'll go and finish it fast and then will join you...and haa..." She took money bundle from her bag and forwarded to Manik to which he made a confused face.

"Yeh....Rings ke liye..." She said and kept in his hand.

"Maa...Please..we'll talk about this later..." He said and kept that in her bag.

She sighed and left.

The ride was silent and Manik was time to time looking at Nandini who was looking at her hands or outside sometimes.

He stopped at one jewelry shop and both got down. He led her to rings section and instructed the sales person to show rings for engagement.

He kept on showing many models but Manik didn't like any.

"Nandu...You liked anything...??" He asked and she replied "No Sir.."

Hearing 'sir', he looked around to see if anyone noticed and found that sales person staring at them. He gritted his teeth looking at Nandini and she looked down.

He then looked at the sales person and he started showing couple rings to divert the moment.

"Sir..these are the latest designs.." He said while showing two rings that are meant for couple.

"Nice...Nandu...You liked it..??" Manik asked showing them to her.

She nodded with a little smile and Manik asked the sales person, "Can I get our names carved on the rings..??"
