It had been six years since Daniel's sentence and David adopting two of his former campers, Max and Harrison. Max was a usual sassy sixteen year old while Harrison lingered towards nineteen, and still a senior in high school.
David, while being a freshly cut thirty year old, was a teacher at Max and Harrison's high school and the new owner of Camp Campbell during the summer. David has things working out for him, he got two kids, he got a promotion that he rightly deserved, he actually started a small band to fill time, and he built up some muscle and a beard.
But one thing lingered from his past that he was unable to forget, Daniel. David hoped that Daniel was doing fine and getting help while David indulged in a few things he probably shouldn't of been doing. It wasn't drugs or alcohol but more like two to three things from an adult store and silicone male genitalia at three in the morning.
David has tried a couple times to get the real deal but for some reason he was unable to do it because as soon as they would start he would think of a former blond coworker and stop at that. Max and Harrison though knew of David's dilemma since they had the habit of staying up till three in the morning and hearing the freckled red-head.
"David!" Harrison said quickly as he raced down the stairs and into the kitchen, "I need some help with the math homework!"
"You were supposed to do that last night." David said as he turned off the stove and put the bacon onto a large plate.
Harrison hugged David tightly, "Please! Please, David! I didn't do it because Max wanted to play that new game you got us!"
David looked at Harrison and smiled a bit. "Max didn't do it either did he?" He asked giving a small sigh.
Harrison shook his head and spoke, "He also stayed up late. He's still asleep."
"What!?" David exclaimed as he got from Harrison's grip, "I'll go wake him up. You go ahead and get started on breakfast."
David made his way up the stairs and into Max and Harrison's room. He walked up to the large lump that sat in Max's bed and David shook it a bit.
"Max. C'mon. Get up." David said soothingly.
A small groan came from Max as he uncovered his head, "I feel sick." He mumbled looking at David.
"Bull honkey," David said removing the blanket Max covered himself with. "Harrison already ratted you out so come downstairs and have some breakfast."
"No really, David." Max said reaching for the blanket. "My stomach fucking hurts and I'm gonna vomit."
David stared at Max a little worryingly though still had some doubts. Max was one of those kids that would fake being sick to get out of doing anything. So David placed his hand onto Max's head.
"You're burning!" David exclaimed as he took his hand away. "Let me just check your temperature."
Max nodded and let out a small raspy cough as David placed the blanket back onto Max. He headed to the bathroom and took a thermometer from the cabinet and took it back to Max.
"Open." He said as he brought the thermometer to Max's mouth.
Max held onto the thermometer to ensure that it stayed in his mouth and waited for the beep. Once it came David took it and looked at the number displayed, "102... Alright, Max. You stay here, I'll go drop off Harrison and I'll be right back."
The curly haired boy nodded his head as David grabbed his phone and called the school board. He informed them that he'll have to take a day off due to one of the boys being sick and recommended a substitute for his class. Once he got the answer, he took Harrison to school and stopped at the supermarket to get some soup for Max. He got a few cans of chicken noodle soup and headed back to the house.
"Max! I'm back!" David said loudly as he set the bags onto the counter and headed up to Max.
He stopped when he heard choking and coughing coming from the bathroom, he ran to the bathroom to Max, who was leaning his head into the toilet and throwing up. David walked over, collected Max's growing hair into a ponytail and pat his back.
"It... it hurts." Max mumbling in between coughs.
"I know it does. But it's okay. I got you some soup so you can relax and watch some tv." David said with a calming, motherly tone.
Max nodded his head as he raised up and David wiped Max's mouth with a wet washcloth, soon tossing it into the tub.
"I'll go grab the bucket and you can head into the living room," David said as he helped Max up. "I'll also pull out the couch and bring your game system there."
Max nodded again and shakily made his way downstairs, flopping onto the couch and curling up.
Soon David joined Max downstairs. He gave Max a blanket as he pulled out the couch and let Max lay onto it. David slowly collected the things, giving them to Max or sitting them around him.
"Are you good, Max?" David asked and looked at the curly haired boy that was currently asleep. "Oh."
David smiled and sat down next to Max. He gave his curly hair some soft pets as he turned the channel to the news. What popped up almost made him scream.
"Daniel Culsmith. Released from prison on accounts of good behavior." The news anchor started to say, "He will still be attending therapy until signs of improvement show."
David stared at the screen in disbelief, 'Daniel,' he thought, 'being released today?'
'Will he be coming here!? Wait! He... He doesn't know where I live.' David let out a small sigh of a somewhat relief. Yet, he felt a knot show up in his stomach, he couldn't handle this feeling.
David quickly got up from the couch and went to the kitchen. His hand curled itself into a fist and threatened to punch the closes thing, a wall, but refrained from doing so he didn't wake up Max.
He gritted his teeth and gave a small whine as he placed his hands onto his head. The knot just got stronger and he felt a twinge of pain in his chest.
David remembered everything that happened at the camp. Every emotion came hitting him harder than a freight train. He let his body lean against a wall and slide to the floor. He kept his knees to his chest as he cried, it wasn't pretty as he sniffled and whimpered into his knees.
It wasn't until the doorbell rang and a knock that he decided to get up and at least attempt to clean himself up. He gave a small shaky sigh and went to the door to answer it, faking his usual big smile, hoping it would distract from his red face.
