It was exactly 9 o'clock at night. We were deep into the forest and far away from the City, so it should have been no surprise when I started tripping on loose branches. Slightly embarrassed, I turned on my flashlight from my pack.
Rya was fast asleep, snuggled into the warmth of my pack. Nathan and I were still talking about how I managed to block block him. "The next step in your training would be to break past a block. How did you block me again?"
I laughed and replied, "I already told you three times. I imagined a wall protecting my mind." He nodded wistfully. He seemed to be thinking about it a lot because he blurted, "Why don't you use your gift?"
But just as I was about to answer, the bush right in front of us moved. I heard Nathan pull out his knife, but didn't process it until his back was in front of me. I blinked. I hadn't realized how tall he was. I remembered to grab my gun.
Then, a boy came out. As he looked up, I realized I know this boy.
"Howl!" I scurried from behind Nathan. Autumn! Wait! Then I lunged straight into Howl's arms.
"Whoa!" Howl fell back from the force and we both landed on the ground. When I heard Rya yelp, I quickly took off my pack to check on him. As I opened it, Rya leaped out and licked my face. I giggled. Nathan shifted closer to me as Howl looks at me."Autumn?" I smiled. "Hi Howl." Nathan cleared his throat.
"Howl, this is Nathaniel. Nathaniel, this is Howl. My childhood friend." I introduced.
Howl stood and began circling Nathan. What is he doing? I smiled. Getting to know you. He's also a mutant. Part wolf. Rya jumped up and started to circle around Howl. Howl paused to look at Rya. He barked and Howl laughs. "Sophie you can come out now." I gasped. I sensed Nathan's confusion, but ignored it. When she crawled out of the bushes, I hugged her too.
"Autumn! What are you doing here?" Sophie was Howl's little sister. At around 15 her puberty had started, but it definitely worked in her favor.
"We're heading to my mom's hideout." Sophie laughed, "So are we! We should join up! Safety in numbers."We were just fine on our own. I looked up at Nathan. He seemed uncomfortable and upset. I tilted my head. What's wrong? Then I felt it. I felt it before, but this was stronger.
He blocked me. Worried, I opened my mouth to ask him why he blocked me but was cut off by Howl's question to Nathan. "What's your gift?" I could see Nathan didn't want to talk so I told them it was the same as mine. When I spoke, Howl turned his attention to me. "How are the... visions?" I smiled. "Haven't had one in two days."
I'm probably going to have one soon though.
Okay. Let me explain: because I haven't used my gift in a few (5) years, I've had to suffer... consequences. Other mutants don't have the same illness as telekinetics like me. I have visions. But I don't just see them. I feel, hear, taste, touch, and smell them as if I'm living them in real time.By the way, this next scene is a vision.
My thoughts were interrupted when a floating orb of white gas suddenly appears in front of me. It was so pretty, almost like a star. The white light it emitted was flickering as if running low on power.
I reached out to touch it, but it floated out of my grasp. I looked back at the group to see if they could see it too, but they were gone. I was surrounded by eerie, silent darkness. The only source of light was the orb and it was floating away.
I gasped, not wanting to be left alone and chased after it. The orb flew faster, so I ran faster.
Back in the City, we were never allowed to run so fast.
Back in the City, it was shameful for a girl to run in public.
Back in the City, the government ruled your life.Suddenly, I lost the orb and the path split in two. I panicked, searching for the light. I saw a shimmer down the left one, so that's the path I took.
I ran as fast as I could, but I soon felt a force tugging me back. I screamed as the darkness enveloped me. I screamed, and punched, and kicked. "No! It's getting away!"Tears started pooling in my eyes. I sank to the floor. As I pulled my legs to my chest, I sobbed into my knees. I hate to admit it but now I was ugly-crying. Recognition slowly came back to me, as did the voices that were directing questions toward me.
"Autumn! Are you ok?" "What did was it? What did you see?" "Give her some space, this seemed intense. Autumn, was it intense?" I pulled away from the voices, bile rising in my throat. I tried to swallow it down, but failed after two attempts.
As I wipe my mouth, I try to stand and process my surroundings, but when I put the smallest amount of weight on my foot, pain shoots up my leg and I collapse again. Right as I hit the ground, four faces appear in front of mine. I push myself back in surprise. Even though I knew the faces, I wanted to run from them, their concern, and their pity.
I groan and shove myself away. It didn't matter that they were worried or tried to follow, so long as I had a few minutes to regain my pride. I hated it when anyone, including my mom and my sister, saw me in my weakest form. I sank to the ground when I thought about my sister. Tears threatened to spill but I held them back. My sister isn't blood related, but we are soul bound.
She was a runaway. We found her outside an old Target store fast asleep.
I stumbled into her a couple times after, and she was sweet to me. I was five and she was eight then. Finally, I convinced my mom to adopt her.
But I haven't seen her in a few months. She left a few days after mom did. I tried looking for her, without a single lead. Howl helped when he could, but he usually had to work.Everyday at six pm, I would find a note from her saying she was fine and that Sprout, her weasel, was okay too.
Kallie. Her name was Kallie. As long as I remember that, her name will continue to be Kallie.
I need to get it together. I've lived through these visions, these illusions, for five years. I can handle a few more.I'll find her or she'll find me. No mutation can keep us apart.
With that, I limped back to the others.
How was that? I know it was probably really sucky. I'm sorry! I'm still new at this. Only two people have read this before I posted it so I don't really know quite what to expect yet.
Anyway, please tell me what you think. I would love some feedback to make me a better writer.
