“One more exam Kiera!” Liz exclaimed. “And, don’t forget tomorrow is Friday.”
“What’s tomorrow?” Kiera was clueless.
“The party!”
“Shhhhhh.” They were sitting outside of the coffee shop.
“See I knew you would forget.” She chuckled. “But you’re in luck, it has been decided to have it after the exams, so NEXT Friday.”
“See, now that makes more sense.” Kiera sipped her coffee. But she still wasn’t very sure, she rarely went to parties, in fact she’s only been to one.
“Crap.” Liz looked down at her phone. “I was supposed to meet my dad.” She quickly gathered her things. “I’ll see you Wednesday, our last exam.” She waved and ran off.
Kiera decided to take this time to study. It was a sunny, quiet day. She enjoyed these days best. She pulled out her notebook, reading over notes.
After a while, a shadow casted over her papers. She looked up in surprise to see James.
“Hey, what are you doing here?” Kiera asked.
“Just grabbing some coffee, I see you’re busy studying. “ He wore his shades over his face and had his blazer coat collars were popped up covering his face.
“Yes I am, are you hiding from someone?” Kiera scanned him from head to toe, which she noticed may have seemed a bit odd.
“Not at all. You need some company?” He pulled off his shades.
“Sure, why not.”
“Great, let me grab a drink. You want a refill?”
“Oh, no don’t bother. I still have plenty.”
Kiera had her eyes on him the whole time. From his walk inside, with his hands struggling to fit in his jean pockets, his awkward tallness, the way his hair stood up. She didn’t mean to analyze him but there was something about him. Then she noticed him signing a paper for the cashier. Probably asked for his number. And he freely gave it to her.
“So what’s your next exam?” He asked sitting in front of her.
“Economics. Not too worried about it.”
“Ah, business major?” He asked sipping from his cup.
“Yep, my boring passion.” She giggled. “But what about you, why aren’t you in school?”
“Not my thing.” He laughed, but Kiera wasn’t buying it. “Okay, truth is, I wanted to start a band.”
“Didn’t work out?” She became curious. Maybe he was in a band.
“No, it did. We’re on break, so I’m only here for a few weeks. But enough about me.” He took his final sip and stood up. “Let’s go see a movie.”
“Now?”
“Yah now, pack up.” He smirked.
He placed his shades back on and popped up his collar.
“Are you embarrassed to be seen with me James?” She joked.
“Of course not.” He laughed. “I just hate the sun.”
Together they walked down the street side by side. They were heading to the tiny cinemas, about a 20 minute walk from the café.
His height made Kiera feel self- conscious of her own height. He was tall and lanky, while she was tiny. Most people have mistaken her for a younger age of 15 or 16 years.
James would tell stories of his bandmates, but he never went past that. Not even the band name.
“Did you know there supposedly someone famous at our building?” Kiera wondered if James would know who it was.
“Is that so? I had no clue. I hope it’s Selena Gomez.” He chuckled.
“I hope it’s Zac Efron.”
“Touché.” He replied, and they both broke out into laughter.
After a minute of silence, Kiera noticed something absolutely unbelievable. Two girls across the street began pointing right at them. All of a sudden a handful of them came running from around the corner. The group got bigger and bigger.
“James.” She stopped him. He looked at her confused, than followed her gaze and was horrified. A herd of girls, about 30 of them, running towards them.
“Shit.” He muttered under his breath.
Kiera stood still in shock. James grabbed her by the arm and began to drag her along.
“James!” She gasped behind him, with his hand tightly wrapped around her arm. “What is going on?!”
Kiera took a glance back and immediately begun to pick up the pace when she realised they were being caught up to.
After what seemed like hours of running, we crossed the intersection at the last possible moment. The group was held back before the lights.
James pulled me into a dark valley where we crouched behind a garbage bin.
Kiera leaned back against the wall, breathing heavily. She tried to hold her heavy breath in but that only made it come out louder.
The screaming girls could literally be heard screaming right past the alley.
“Okay, they’re gone. Let’s go.” James brushed the dirt off his pants.
Kiera however, stood up in silence trying to understand what just happened. Then everything was becoming clearer.
“Of course.” She said. James turned around, a little red.
“You’re the famous person. The band, that’s why you didn’t want to talk about it.”
James fiddled with his fingers.
“I must be living under a rock!” she threw her arms in the air. “Why didn’t you tell me?” She asked calmly.
“I-I. I don’t know. Okay, so do you want something? Autograph, picture?” He asked unhappily.
“Yes.” She answered with a straight face. “That’s all I really want, and then I’m out.”
He raised his head in shock.
“No James. I don’t want an autograph or a picture.” She smiled. “God, I don’t even know who you are, as a celebrity I mean.”
He laughed. “You know.” He started, throwing his arm over her shoulders as they walked out of the alley. “You should be embarrassed.”
“Why’s that?”
“Well, you were so suspicious of who the celebrity in our building was, that you didn’t even realise it was the person you were hanging out with.”
“Okay, yes I am oblivious. Thank you. But now I really want to hear about your band life.”
