"Sunshine! Sunshine! Get up bitch!"
My eyes fluttered open to the welcoming sight of Maverick seizing me by both shoulders and shaking me awake. Typical start to the day. Typical Maverick.
"Morning Maverick" I half grumbled.
I sat up bleary eyed, trying desperately hard not to accidentally knock something in the van over. Yep we camped out in the van last night, and judging by the smell from the open van door, Maverick had been refilling the gas tank before waking me.
I stood up and began preparing our breakfast - the joys of cheap beans with a use by date of 2023 (it was 2019 at the moment) - while Maverick began inspecting the van for any damage that may have occurred overnight.
I heated the beans up on our old dented camping stove. It had a habit of being temperamental at the most inconvenient moments - either producing a large flame that once cost me an eyebrow, or refusing to produce even a small flame and simply sulking before the first option inevitably happened - however today it appeared to be behaving.
"Maverick! Beans are done!" I called in her direction.
"Coming!" I heard who I believed to be her, call back from behind a sand dune.
"Hold on, I'm over here" Maverick appeared from the top of the van, a plushie frog that she had named Freddo perched on top of her light brown hair.
I turned in the direction of the sand dune to see a tall girl with brown curls that went just below her chin towering over me. She wore a purple top hat perched on her head, a matching purple leather jacket over a 'come to the dark side we have cookies' t shirt, faded black and white stripy jeans, purple and black laced leather boots and a psychotic grin. I noticed a black, white and purple laser gun in the purple holster around her waist, however it had either been in several battles, or had been dropped many times and then thrown at a cactus because the shiny paintwork was covered in scratches. She had a battered purple bag slung over one shoulder bulging with various objects - including a can of BL/ind brand energy drink poking out of the top.
I looked puzzled at the girl in front of me, as she took the energy drink out of her bag and took a sip.
"Hey, so what's your name?" I said, standing up and smiling as best as I could. After all, she was a fellow Killjoy so we couldn't judge.
"Hey you're British too!!!" She shouted much too loudly, I was only two meters or so away from her. "I'm Crazy Uzi what's your name?"
I smiled a little more, we had a fellow Brit on our hands here.
"I'm Screaming Sunshine and this is Classic Maverick but everyone calls us Sunshine and Maverick."
"Oh cool names!!!! Call me Uzi, everyone used to call me Crazy and I thought they were just shortening my name. Turns out they were just saying I was crazy."
"Don't worry we're crazy too! Freddo told me so." Maverick yelled from the top of the van, making Freddo dance while she was talking.
Uzi took a long gulp of energy drink and gave us her ever present grin. I swear that she was part Cheshire cat or something.
Still, we seemed to have a new friend. And who knew? Maybe Uzi knew where the Getaway Mile was.
