I woke up to black. Lights-out nothingness. I gripped the sides of the bed I was in. Should I say something? I had been found, after all.
"H-hello?" I called out. The lights flickered to life. I was in a hospital room, a motion sensor hanging over my head. I was hooked up to tons of equipment, a beeping in the back of my head. I turned around to find a heart rate monitor.
The door cracked open and a small, stitched face peered through the crack. It was Bonnie.
She ran in and threw her arms around my neck. I pulled her in tightly, breathing in her strawberry aroma. I held her at arms length, a huge scar stretched out across her face like a spider web, the center at her left eyebrow. My ma came in and squeezed Bonnie and I tightly, as if the world would end if she let go.
"We were so worried," Ma whispered in my ear. Her tears splashed onto my shoulder. "I love you so, so, so much."
"You too, Ma," I croaked. I smiled. Safe, I was safe. Finally, my ma let go.
My mother started rummaging through a duffle bag "I brought you clothes, a toothbrush, hairbrush, your favorite stuffed animal-"
"Ma!" I laughed, "I'll only be here for a week!" I realized Bonnie had been awfully quiet.
"Hey, Bonnie," I said. She waved and smiled. "How are ya?" I tried again. Bonnie gave me a thumbs up. I glanced at my mom. Tears danced in her eyes. "Ma?" I said cautiously.
My mother broke down, " They found a man, c-cutting out her t-tounge! She's mute!" All the air in my body disappeared.
"Oh, Bonnie," I whispered, tears starting to leak from my eyes. "Oh, Bonnie, I'm so sorry." Sam had gotten her and stole her beautiful voice. And he was to pay dearly for this.
