After spending the day with Steve, you go home and settle down for bed. Steve contemplates what Tommy said to him earlier. How the hell is he going to get through this?
He thinks for hours on end and finally decides what he will do. This is going to break his heart but more importantly, yours. He goes to bed and stresses what the next day holds for the two of you.
You wake up to your alarm clock ringing in your ears obnoxiously. You lean up and slam your hand down on the clock then fall back on your pillow. Finally, you get up and get ready for school. Both you and Steve skipped yesterday and you would need to talk to teachers about missed work. Once you're all ready to leave, you stop in the kitchen and make some toast before heading out the door. Expecting to see Steve waiting outside, you open your door and look at your empty door step.
You walk over to Steve's house and ring the door bell. There's no answer. That's strange, you think to yourself. Not wanting to be late, you begin the walk to school. The walk seems different without Steve. Your hand is empty and feels cold. Usually there is conversation and laughs along the way but you quietly walk by yourself and worry about Steve. He was strange when you left his house yesterday. It's like his mind was far away.
Arriving at the school, you see Tommy and a bunch of his friends and oddly enough, Steve. Confused, you walk up to him. Maybe he wanted to talk to teachers before school started. Just feet away from the group you call out for Steve.
He turns around to look at you with a slight trace of sadness in his expression but that quickly slips away and is covered with an emotionless mask. "(Y/N), we have to talk," Steve mutters and looks down. He runs a hand through his hair. "Listen, you're a nice girl and all but I'm gonna have to let you go," He sounds as if he is firing you from your job rather than breaking up with you.
"Let me go?" You ask softly. You stare at his face like he is speaking another language.
"Jesus, (Y/N), I'm breaking up with you," Steve puts on a fake annoyed face when deep down he doesn't want to do this. You look around at his group of friends and they're all grinning. Tears begin to fall from your eyes.
"You're breaking up with me?" You say. When ever you start crying, you hold your breath and exhale quietly. You've only ever been a loud cryer when you were an infant or when something truly tragic happens. "Why? I mean, Steve-" You pause. "You said you loved me."
"That's exactly it, loved. Past tense and I don't love you anymore. So get out of my face," He stares into your (Y/E/C) eyes while he says this and then turns back to his friends who all laugh and pat him on the back. When Steve turns his head to his friends, a single tear drops from his eye.
"Okay," you say but it's barely even a whisper. Regardless, Steve heard it and waited for you to walk away before he wiped his tear off of his cheek.
You run to the bathroom and close yourself in a stall. You can not believe he just broke up with you. Just yesterday he was telling you that you were the coolest girlfriend and now you're nothing to him. You just lost your boyfriend and your best friend all at once. Once you finally stop yourself from crying, you leave the stall and go to the mirror to clean yourself up. When you are satisfied with how you look, besides the red and puffy eyes, you exit the bathroom and go to your locker.
Some tears escape your eyes but it's not as bad as before. Taking out your first class materials, you close the locker but walk into someone and drop everything.
"Oh shoot, I'm sorry," you say without looking up, hoping they don't realize that you're crying. You pick up your books but the person you bumped into is leaning down to help.
