"Shit!" I rush over to the girl to help her stand but when I go to reach for her, she screeches at me and damns near claws my eyes out.

"Whoa! I just wanted to help you kid!" I shout whilst backing up fast with my hands up. I watch her as she pushes herself up and I can see her body trembling. Obviously, she was trying to move too fast. At this point, Jock strolls in from outside, jumps up onto the bed and stares at the kid. He is almost as big as she is. I notice she is frozen in place, staring at the overgrown dog as he watches her. I take a step forward slowly, keeping my eyes trained on her in case she decides to go all child-ninja on me again. Jock then snorts at her, darts forward and licks her face from chin to eye and lays down on her legs stopping her from escaping as he then decides her hand needs to be cleaned. She just stares at him with a stupefied look on her face, and without any warning throws her head back and bursts out in laughter. I stand there in the middle of my home watching my bear of a dog clean this young woman's hand who is covered in cuts and bruises and I am pretty sure I am now the one sporting the stupefied face.

The damn female has made my wild found bad-tempered wolf-dog into a kitten! Her laughter starts to quiet and it steadily turns into sobs that seem to shake her entire body. I watch as she crumbles to broken pieces in front of me and I don't know what to do and I just stand there like an idiot, searching back into my memories for what people do to comfort folks. Tea! That's what mama used. "There isn't a problem a good cuppa tea can't help fix boy" she used to tell me with finality. I take another look at the kid and see that she has buried her face and hands into Jocks coat and he just looks at me and I swear I can see him giving me sympathy eyes. That dog has been round fewer people than I have and he knows what to do without doing it before? "Stupid dog" I mutter under my breath as I walk out of the house and towards my covered well. I stay out there looking at my surroundings trying to burn time so the kid can get it out her system. After a few minutes of silence, I stroll back into my home and build a fire for the water. Once that is done I head to the kitchen and start sorting out some easy food for her since she's been out a good while and looks half-starved.

"Dogs name is Jock," I say to fill the silence with my back to her and it's the only thing I could think of to say. She's quiet for a minute or so but then asks quietly in a soft voice.

"Where am I? Who are you? Why am I here?" she rushes breathlessly.

"Whoa lass, one question at a time, please. As for the where you are in my home on my land. Scotland or fife to be more precise. My name is Nathan Black and you are here because I found you in the woods all beat up and passed out. Didn't think it would be right to just leave you there".

I respond and sit down in my chair beside the fire. I catch her glancing at the door and quickly add before she tries to take a step towards it.

"You have been out for almost two days so you are going to need to rest and build up your strength. If you leave now I will just find you passed out again maybe a mile, half-mile from here."

If at all possible she grows even paler and sways a little. The kid looks at me pleadingly and quietly says so soft I have to strain to hear it.

"You are not safe, I am not safe. If I have been here for that long they will already be close. I am sorry but I need to leave now. I have to keep moving. I need to go it's not safe for you to stay either".

By the end, it's almost a whisper but I caught the drift of her words.
