I wake with a gasp. I check my surroundings and see that I'm no longer in the place from my dreams, I'm in my bedroom. I look around at the blank walls and sigh as relief washes over me. My room is simple, there's not much, just a full sized bed, a night stand, a dresser with clothes, a desk and chair, and a simple closet. The room itself is actually an efficiency studio with a small kitchen in the corner, a bathroom on the far right, and a living area that is never put to use. The small apartment doesn't have too much of a personality, I never saw a reason to decorate since I never really stayed in one place for too long. I glance at the clock on the table and see that it reads 5:45 AM, I sigh and pull back my black comforter as I get up for the day. 'It's not like I'm gonna get any more sleep now.' I think to myself after making my bed up to pristine condition. I tend to keep the place looking as if no one even lives here, it's something I never really let go of after all these years.
I change into some jeans, combat boots with a steal toe, a plain top before moving to the kitchen. I make a cup of coffee and add cream, before making breakfast. I usually have a the same thing, eggs (scrambled of course) toast, and whatever fruit I decide that morning. After that, I clean and put all of the dishes away, grab my school bag and tattered leather jacket, and i go out the door. I have a necklace that doubles as a watch, and the time reads 6:30 AM. I make my way down the stairs of my building but I see a figure coming towards me. "Miss Chase. I see you no longer use a phone, you've been hard to reach," I recognize the mans voice immediately and let out a sigh as I turn to face him. "Come on Nick, we both know it's not hard for you to reach anyone." I say to The former director of SHIELD, "What is it this time? I've been laying low just like you asked." Fury looks at me in silence before walking ahead of me, "Let's go for a walk." I begin to protest, "Listen, I'd love to chat, but you know I have school, and yes, I know you've been keeping an eye on me." He doesn't skip a beat with his response, "You're precisely right, which means we both know you have time." He pauses to look at me, "Now quit arguing and let's walk."
We walk in silence on the busy streets on New York, I wait patiently for Nick to explain why he's here to see me. As if he can read my mind he breaks the silence, "Listen, I know you're used to being on your own, but it's time that changed." My eyes widen in shock, "Oh no, no no no, don't start. I'm not picking up and leaving my life right now." He gives me a stern look, making me bite my tongue. He continues, "Since SHIELD went down, you're no longer able to hide out the way you have been. You have spent years doing the same damn thing with nothing to show for it." I look down at the pavement as we walk on, I hate hearing him say it, but it's true. Fury continues, "Listen, Romanov left after shit hit the fan, I can't find her and I know you can't either. You're alone, and I'm sorry for that."
I think about how Nat disappeared without warning, I haven't heard from her in months, but I know there's a reason. We all have to survive. Nick stops and I finally look up and meet his eye. "What exactly is it that you want me to do?" I ask, wanting him to get to the point. "I've made Stark aware of your situation. Your skillset is valuable, but that's not what this is about. He can take care of you while Romanov is gone." I roll my eyes, "Okay, one, I don't need anyone to take care of me. Two, why Stark?" Nick gives me a knowing look. "Because he can keep you safe, and just because he won't be giving you missions, doesn't mean he won't let you train with the team." Nick sees the hesitation in my face and lets out a sigh. "It's a chance, and you can't go with Barton because he's gone too. I know you prefer to be alone, but this is what Natasha would want for you. You'll be safe." I listen quietly and think over what he says, then I wonder out loud, "Why are you hear to tell me this?" He chuckles, "Chase, do you really think you'd listen to anyone else right now?" He's right, I probably would've brushed anyone else off, but not Nick. Suddenly I hear a bell ringing, I realize we walked all the way to my high school. "Here we are kid, I have to go, but here," He hands me a piece of paper, "Stark's number, he has yours, expect a call soon." I read the information on the card, and when I look up, Fury is gone. I smile to myself, because after all this time, it was still nice to see him.
