I walked into school on Wednesday ready to see Peter and Ned again. I had missed a few days because I wanted to practice my new skills at home. It was like I'd found a new confidence in myself that I never knew I had, I mean, of course Romanov had raised me to be confident like her, but this was different. Before I knew that with training I could accomplish the near impossible. Now, I know I can do so much more.
Ned found me in the hall, clearly excited to see me. "Carter! Where have you been? We thought you transferred schools, or that maybe you were being homeschooled! Peter said you were probably just sick, were you? Was it bad? Did you go to the hospital? Are you okay now? Are you-," Ned began to ramble on before Peter cut him off. "Ned, maybe you should slow down and she can tell us." He chuckled at his friend's over powering imagination. "Oh, I had a family thing." I shrugged, 'at least that's true,' I smiled to myself. Before Ned could ask for details, the bell rang, signaling the start of class. We parted ways, and Peter and I made our course for class.
Once we were settled in class, I turned to Peter, "Hey, since I missed some classes, do you think I can come by today after school for a cram session?" I asked him quietly to avoid the professor's attention. Peter's eyes widened and he blushed and he started to stutter before asking, "a what?" he whispered back. It took me a moment before I realized, "to study, you dirty bastard!" I whispered and let out a chuckle. Peter quickly shook his head in embarrassment while I tried not to laugh at him, "yeah yeah yeah yeah, sure. Tonight? Yeah, I can do tonight. Uh, where do you want to meet?" He questioned. "Is your place okay? You gave me your address before. We can meet after school and walk together." I replied. He thought it over for a moment and responded, "Yeah sure, we can leave after class." He whispered before we caught a glare from the teacher. We continued our notes in silence. 'It's funny, I can feel how nervous he is. It's kind of cute." I smiled to myself, happy that I can get closer to him. 'whoa there Carter, this is the mission... right?"
At lunch we sat together again, Michelle and I making jokes and poking fun at the boys while they got to talk to each other and nerd out. I caught myself laughing with them, 'had I made friends, is this the mission that Stark gave me, or was this really me getting close to these people?' I thought as I looked around the table. I couldn't help but smile at the idea.
