Betty charged out the door, canvas bags in her hand. The sacks were overflowing with bills. Sirens echoes through the city as several policemen booked it down the sidewalk to reach her. She discreetly turned a corner. She prayed that she wouldn't be caught. After all, the money was to pay the blackmail of Darla and her brother's landlord.
She speedwalked down to an alley. Thinking the car parked at the very end was her own getaway car, Betty bolted towards it. Again she heard the yells of Sheriff Keller and his goons.
She popped open the passenger door, rambling, "Okay Chic I got the money, just get home now and we can-"
She stopped dead.
Instead of her brother's angular face and sandy hair, she found a stranger. He had wenge colored hair that bounced in loose waves. It was covered by a beanie, worn through with holes, that was shaped like a crown. His eyes were a dark hazel. By the look on his face, he was terrified.
Goddamn it, she thought, Chic left me for dead.
Without thinking, she screamed, "Drive! Fucking drive!"
He was completely disoriented, but complied. He tore off around the block, yelling over the engine, "So you're not even going to ask what my name is?"
"Oh, uh, sorry! I'm Betty."
"Jughead. Pleasure to meet you."
He looked like he was going to say more, but was silenced by 3 police cars roaring down the street. They were cutting off traffic amongst beeping horns. Jughead once again swerved to avoid them.
"Keep your head down, they won't suspect a stranger!"
"Have you done this before?" she asked in awe.
He smirked, "Have you?"
The cops pulled him over, Betty and the money hiding just out of view.
"Sir," Keller started, "do you know how fast you were going?"
Jughead shook his head.
"Alright then. I'll let you off with a warning. It was partially our fault for scaring you so bad."
Jug brushed his hair back. "Why were you chasing me again?"
"See, we thought you might be the getaway for a fugitive robber we're looking for."
"How much did they steal?"
"10 grand."
Jug whisper-screamed, "10 thousand-" He was cut off by Betty kicking him in the ankle. He cleared his throat, "That's, uhh, that's a lot."
There was an uncomfortable silence.
"Hope you find them," the boy continued nervously.
Keller tipped his hat to him and he vanished. Betty climbed up from her hiding spot and perched herself in the seat again.
"Can you give me a ride home?"
He nodded, and drove her back to her gorgeously manicured house. Why she needed the money, he could never guess.
She gave him a kiss on the cheek, and handed him a stray 100. With that, she skipped inside, canvas bags in either hand. Jughead looked down at the bill.
On it was her phone number.
