Betty tapped her foot on the floor, anxiously checking her watch.
Archie was supposed to show up for date night at 6:00. The hands on the face breezed past 6:00 and sauntered into 7:00. No sign of him.
A kindly young waitress came to the table, notebook and pen in hand.
She asked, "Miss, are you ready to order yet?", gesturing to the discarded menu.
"Could I please have just a few more minutes?"
"Of course ma'am, whenever you're ready."
Betty glanced around. The surrounding patrons eyed her apologetically. It couldn't have been more obvious that she was being stood up if someone screamed it in their faces. She turned a beet red with singeing embarrassment.
7:45 rolled around. The minutes dragged on as if carrying dumbbells.
She gathered up her things and was just about to get up to leave when a man she'd never seen before came speeding in.
"I'm so sorry I'm late babe, traffic was terrible," he wheezed, pulling his crown shaped beanie off of his head. He leaned in, murmuring, "I'm Jughead. Just go with it ok?"
Betty lifted her gaze, catching her first glimpse of him. He had hair the color of earth after it rains. It was thick and fell in wavy tendrils, seemingly unkempt, and yet so strategically placed. He had dark sea-green eyes that could outshine the sun. His smile made her swoon. This man was a god.
"Whoever didn't bother to show up is an asshole," he whispered.
Thank you, Betty mouthed.
After they had finished up dinner, Jughead turned to her and took her hands.
"You wanna do something fun?"
He led her to his motorcycle, where she stopped in her tracks.
"No way, " she gaped, "I'm not riding that thing. I don't even have a helmet!"
"You can use mine if you want."
"What about you? Isn't it dangerous?" she fretted.
He chuckled, "I've done riskier things."
"Like what?"
"Like hijacking that date."
Betty chewed her lip nervously. "Fine."
He roared to the side of Sweetwater River, skidding to a halt next to a little boat, which he explained belonged to his father.
They stepped in, sloshing in the small puddles in the bottom. He took hold of the oars and began to row. Finally, they arrived at a small peninsula, illuminated by fairy lights.
"Welcome," he said, fastening the boat to the dock, "to Paradise Bank. As far as I know, nobody else knows very much about it, which makes it my own personal thinking place."
"Jughead, it's absolutely breathtaking. Why don't you show me around?"
He beamed. He took her on a tour around the peninsula, pointing out all the handmade decorations and amazing scenery. After a few hours of this, he rowed back across the river. He took her by the waist and hoisted her onto his motorcycle. She gave him her address and rode home with him.
It was only after they had parked and walked up the block that she noticed that he was writing on a small pad on paper.
"What're you writing?"
Jughead smiled warmly, "I just don't want to forget any part of tonight."
"Well if you want to do it again sometime," she said, scribbling her phone number down, "I'd be happy to oblige."
"I still can't believe that I just went on the best date of my life with the most gorgeous girl I've ever seen, and it wasn't even planned!"
Betty giggled, "Guess you're lucky I didn't sock you in the face right when you sat down."
"At least the black eye would have been something to remember you by."
"You would look rather.... dashing," she whispered.
He blushed profusely. "Oh shut up."
She hooked her arms around his neck and bit her lip. "Make me."
They leaned in closer, the undeniable tension rippling through the air. They locked lips, embracing as though they'd known each other all their lives.
"Goodnight Jughead."
"Goodnight... Juliet."
