At the assembly on Friday I arrive late, as I was in the darkroom, developing photos. I take a seat on the edge of the gym bleachers closest to the exit and next to Cody.

"Ready for your close up," Cody whispers.

"Not quite," I smirk.

"And the homecoming royalty for the junior class is; Alexis Lowe and Christian Gordon!" The student council announces. I see many looks of confusion as the two make their way to the gym floor.

"They campaigned all this year. They wanted and clearly deserve it." I simply say.

"So...tin man does have a heart." Cody smiles at me.

"She does." I giggle. I look over at Sophie's friend group, whispering with mixed expressions.

"Checkmate." I grin.

"Loser." Cody teases. I stick out my tongue at him. "Immature loser." He shakes his head. I pull two blue jolly ranchers out of the pocket of my leather jacket and hand one to him. "My favorite loser." Cody puts an arm around me jokingly and takes the jolly rancher. I feel eyes on me and I turn around to see Kyle and the rest of the group staring at Cody and me.

"Oh fuck." I sigh as I enjoy the jolly rancher. Cody looks up at them.

"Fuck them." He rolls his eyes.

"Should we make a run for it?" I giggle.

"And go where?" Cody asks.

"Pike place market," I suggest.

"Pike place?" Cody laughs.

"Yeah, so you can buy me flowers." I shrug.

"Mmm...I'm game." Cody smiles.

"I gotta break up with him, don't I?" I say to Cody.

"He's all wrong for you anyways." Cody shrugs.

"I'll do it later." I sigh. The assembly lets out. Before I can even reach the exit, Kyle is right next to me.

"So...something you and camera boy want to talk about?" Kyle says rhetorically.

"Kyle, he's Cody, he has a name," I say quietly.

"No it's okay Lizzie, he just wants a reaction." Cody shrugs.

"Oh you think you're really smart don't you?" Kyle crosses his arms once we are outside. His group stands not far away.

"Maybe a little more than you." Cody sighs.

"Fuck off." Kyle shoves Cody.

"Kyle!" I raise my voice.

"It's alright Lizzie

"It's alright Lizzie. He's using physicality to express his insecurity. Don't do this, man." Cody rolls his eyes.

"What the hell kind of creature are you?" Kyle scoffs.
