I sat nervously outside the doctor’s room. Everyone had already gone through and now it was my turn. I didn’t want to go, not because I didn’t want my wounds treated but because I didn’t want James to see the extent of my injuries. He insisted on being there and it frustrated me. Brett was currently being taken care of by one of Will’s friends while they were imprisoned. I didn’t want to let him go but I knew I would probably have to.
I jumped a little when the door opened and the last women stepped out. She gave me a timid smile before heading down the hall to where the others were. I hesitantly stood up and walked into the room. I was hoping James had forgotten as he wasn’t there yet but all hope vanished as soon as he entered and strode quickly to my side. He had just been outside talking to someone, obviously in the allowed distance.
The pack’s doctor made small chat as he did a few routine checks. I knew things were about to get bad when he stopped hesitantly with the stethoscope in his hand. He turned toward James and hesitated.
“I need to check her heart beat so I’ll have to touch her chest. I just wanted to let you know so you don’t go all wolf on me when I start to touch her.” He said. James nodded his head and the doctor turned to me. “Will you please pull off your shirt?”
I did as he asked and barley heard James’ intake of breath when he saw my back. I didn’t look at him, knowing I would see only dark rage in his eyes. The doctor pressed the cold metal to my chest and frowned.
“What’s wrong?” James asked immediately.
“Nothing, James, could you step out of the room for a moment? I want to try something with Braize. I’ll call you in when I’m done.” He said. James nodded tensely and stepped from the room. The doctor placed the stethoscope on my chest again and nodded. “That’s what I thought.” He said.
“What do you mean?” I asked now confused.
“You’re heart was racing because James was so close. It’s your wolf reacting to your mate. Even if you don’t notice, it’s happening.” He said. I nodded and he went to the door but I stopped him.
“Can you do my wounds without him in here? He’ll go crazy if I whimper about it and he won’t let you touch me.” I explained. The doctor nodded with a small smile and moved around to my back.
He began to clean it which stung a lot but I managed to hold in my whimpers until he was all done. He wrapped bandages around my back and chest before handing me my shirt. James knocked on the door obviously impatient and I sighed.
“Try not to do anything to vigorous for a bit.” He said with a wink. I blushed and nodded, heading toward the door. I opened it just as James had his hand raised to pound on it. He offered me a small smile but I ignored it and walked past him.
“What happened?” He asked, easily keeping up with me.
“Nothing important. My heart was just racing.” I shrugged. I expected him to call me out on the obvious lie but was surprised when he didn’t. We walked in silence up to his room where he stopped me by lightly grabbing my arm.
“Braize.” He whispered, cupping my cheek in his hand. I looked at him with large eyes and he leaned in to kiss me but I turned my cheek at the last second
“Don’t James.” I said. I was still upset at him and that wasn’t about to change quickly.
“”Jared needs your help.” He said suddenly. “Something’s wrong with Mikala.”
