I stare up at my ceiling, the room around me dark. Glancing over at my clock, it reads 4:45 a.m. It's too late to fall back asleep. I don't think I could anyway. Although I got more sleep than usual-- a whole three hours. I stare intently at the ceiling fan above me, watching the blades turn monotonously. I reach over to my phone, the screen lighting up my surroundings. I sigh, wondering why I even bother and then dial the number again.
I listen to the familiar ringing, waiting for the message at the end. My heart skips a beat, as the ringing comes to a halt. "Hey, this is Gabbie! I can't come to the phone but I'll get back to you soon." I hear myself in the background and smile a little, remembering all the fun times we've had. I sigh, hanging up. I've called her phone multiple times a day since she left. I never expect an answer. It's just comforting to hear her voice again.
I hit the dial button again, looking around as I wait for the tone. I roll over onto my side, trying to waste away the time before I have to get ready for school. I think I drift off for a few minutes, but jerk back awake from my alarm. I get ready in the same repetitious daily schedule. At some point, I decide that there is no way I'm going to school today. But, I can't just stay in my room. I have to make it believable.
Once I'm done, I climb into the car at my usual time. Pulling out of the driveway, I turn the corner and act like I'm going to school. But, at the intersection, I take a left and head to Starbucks instead. I'm only going to waste time anyways. I get a double shot espresso, hoping it'll get me through the day. I sit in the coffee shop, waiting till about eight thirty, thinking everyone should have left by now.
I return home to an empty house and walk back up to my room. I plop down on my bed and start randomly flipping through channels. I settle on one of the morning talk shows and start scrolling through social media. Bored with my choices for entertainment, I start calling Gabbie again. Honestly, it's just white noise in the background to console me. After about the tenth message ends, I pick up my phone and dial again. Setting it down on speaker mode, I listen to the traditional five rings.
"Liza?" I hear. I lurch forward, sitting up.
"Gabbie?" I cry. "Wait, is that really you?"
"Yeah, it's me. I don't have much time," she says urgently into the phone. I can tell she's trying to be quiet.
"Just tell me where you are. We can come get you," I plead.
"Liza, I can't," she says sadly.
"Why? It'll be fine. We'll come get you before he can hurt you anymore."
"No, you don't understand. I don't know. All I know is that we're in some deserted house. The best I can give you is that we were driving for about three days I think." I'm still in shock that it's actually her. "I don't have much time. Don't forget about me while I'm gone, okay?" I can hear her voice break.
"You won't be gone much longer," I try to reassure her. I hear another voice in the distance. It's getting closer, and the closer it gets, the louder it gets.
"You thought you could steal from me, huh? Give it here. GIVE IT BACK! Who were you trying to call?" the voice screamed at Gabbie. I heard her fumble over her words and then shriek in pain.
"Liza! Help me!" she sobbed.
"Gabbie!" I scream. The line went dead and it became silent. "Gabbie? Gabbie?" I worriedly questioned. There was no answer. I call her again but it goes straight to voicemail. I call her again, and again. There is no reply.
AN: these two were pretty short, so i posted two chapters. thanks for everything <3
