On the drive home from school, I feel my phone start vibrating in my pocket. Pulling it out, I'm surprised to see that it's Liza. "Liza?" I ask into the phone.
"I need you to come over. Right now."
"Ok. I'll be there in a few minutes," I respond. She hangs up before I can ask any other questions. I quickly get to Liza's house and knock on the door. She frantically opens up the door, and I walk in. We sit down on the couch and there is a moment of silence.
"What's the emergency?" I ask her.
"Before I tell you, promise me that you won't call me crazy." Her eyes peer at me intently.
"Yes, Liza, I promise."
"So you'll believe what I say?" she asks again.
"Yes I will, I will. What's going on?" I ask her finally.
"I called Gabbie," she started.
"Liza, I told you about this-"
"DAVID! She answered this time. I talked to her. I heard her voice. More importantly, I heard her scream. She isn't safe, David. I don't know where she is, and worst of all, she doesn't even know where she is. She's trapped." Liza puts her head on my shoulder. She sobs and sobs, and I feel the dampness of her tears on my shirt. I want to ask her so many questions, but I know it isn't the time. Liza needs time to recover just like all of us, and I need to be supportive of that.
I don't have the heart to tell her that she must have imagined it. It's normal for you to see or hear someone after a loss. "Liza..." I start, trailing off. "Are you sure it was Gabbie? Is it possible you're just hearing what you want to hear?" I ask her gently, trying not to pry.
"Really? You think what I want to hear is that my best friend is being held captive by someone who could potentially kill her? You really think that's what I'd imagine as my 'happy ever after'?" she shouts back. She sits up, pushing away from me. "You know, I don't even know why I confided in you. The only person I could ever trust is gone now," she says, shaking her head, tears brimming in her eyes. "Just get out," she mumbles.
"Liza, come on," I say trying to reason with her.
"Get out!" she yells louder, pointing to the door. I stand up slowly, hoping she'll change her mind. "Go!" she yells, looking away. I walk to the door and turn the handle, turning around to look at her. Her head is buried in her hands. Sighing, I shut the door behind me.
