"And-and-and-then, we came out of the pond and-"
"Alright, enough," Father Gregory interrupted "Look, I know about it. We just keep it a secret, if everybody knew, who would want to send their kid to Priory?"
"I guess you're right." I said.
"Now, don't go off telling everyone about this, this stays between us."
"Who else knows?"
"The other monks, and the administration. Don't go around talking to them about it. Promise me."
I scanned the room trying not to make eye contact with him, we both knew I was going to make that promise. I out my right arm behind my back and crossed my index and middle finger then said "I promise." I was free to go. I grabbed my backpack and walked out of his office. Jonah was gone. All the teachers had gone back to normal. It was like nothing had ever happened. This wasn't right. I couldn't pay attention in class. Dr. Kalhorn went on with the next chapter and I just stared in my water bottle. John of course had to argue with her about grades. Half the day went by in a flash. It was the usual. AP Stats, Ology, then Social Studies, then AP Bio. Hopefully none of the teachers saw me not paying attention in class. Afterwards I'd have two free periods and I would go visit Mrs. Lane in the Junior School. I would ask her about the shows that we've both seen, and catch up on rumors about movies.
While sitting there all of a sudden I saw her desk move. As if she kicked it. But she couldn't have. She was standing at the door watching the students go to class.
"What was that?" I asked.
"Nothing." she said quickly while peeking behind her desk. "HEY! Don't do that!" she went off to stop a student from doing something bad. I got up and peeked behind her desk. Once I saw what was beneath it, I slowly backed away.
"You've got to be kidding me." I said out loud. There wasn't anything that I could use as a weapon. Before I could do something she walked back in the room.
"I know what you have under your desk. How could you keep that thing?!" I shouted at her.
"It's a surprise for the kids at the ice-cream social after sch-"
"No, this ends now!"
"Wait, wait!"
I went behind her desk to attack it then a dog walked out an sniffed me.
"Oh, I thought it was a-"
"Demi-dog?"
"Yes, how did you-"
She just smiled and shrugged. I let it go.
At the end of the day, I was walking to my car when a black SUV with tinted windows drove up and stopped next to me. Someone on the inside opened the door and told me to get in. They knew about the portal. I stood there looking away from them for a moment then they grabbed me and pulled me in the car.
1 year later
It was my turn to watch the pond. It turns out we didn't close it all the way. Some demi-dogs would sneak out and attack students on the cross country course. I had a lawn chair, a flashlight, and my bat I named Lucille. I watched two demi-dogs crawl out of the water.
"Ugh," I sighed "They don't pay me enough for this." I got up with my flashlight and Lucille and went to work.
