Chapter 10

Jazzy wasn’t acting like herself today. Yes, she was still her snarky sarcastic self but something was off. I knew it; there was a reason we were best-friends. If you didn’t know her, you wouldn’t notice. She sat across from me in the café, laughing, smiling, making sly remarks but she was doing something she only did when she was angry or some matter was on her mind, she tapped her left hand uncontrollably to whatever hard surfaced she could get to.

I hadn’t quite decided how I was going to approach her with the matter. Jasmine, though she hated it when I called her that, was very strong and extremely defensive when she felt attacked. The trick was to carefully creep the subject up on her as not to scare her away, like sneaking up on a spastic squirrel.

“I saw you with Billy yesterday,” She lifted her brow in an accusing way. I felt as if she had slapped me square in the face; this wasn’t good for our friendship. I was very firm on keeping a core of truth in our relationship. I remember threatening Billy when we first met. I had said to him, and this, I will always remember, “If you ever lie to me, I will find out and our friendship will be over.” I hadn’t actually had that conversation with Jaz, but since the incident in elementary school; Jaz knew.

I sighed. “I’m sorry.” I pushed my hair back, taking a huge breath and exhaling. I wasn’t really sure what to say; how to explain things without mentioning Robbie. “It’s Billy, you know how he is.” It was the only excuse I could master but seeing her hand stop abruptly made my heart skip a beat, and smile. I made a straight face before she could see my relief. I knew she was forgiving me with every passing second and most likely blaming Billy.

She smirked and waved her hand, “You know what? It’s fine. I know how Billy could be.” She then held her hands laying them on the table. “On another note, what did you do to the Bitch-Bimbo?”

I looked at her perplexed, and then I remembered our encounter a while back when she called me a whore. I rolled my eyes, “Ashley thinks that I’m trying to steal Leo from her.”

“Which you are,” she replied.

I shook my head. “I may have a crush on my friend, that’s all; I have no chance regardless.”

Jaz’s hands slammed on the table in fury, in irritation. A flash of the future began forming in my mind; I had pissed her off now. This wasn’t good. Her eyebrows began to form a murderous frown, her face started changing in different shades of red, very different from me; she was clearly not embarrassed as I was for myself.

“Do not say that,” she started, “The psycho bitch wouldn’t be nervous if you were beneath her. You are flippin’ beautiful.” I motioned her to keep her voice down, to settle down, because people were beginning to stare. “You are way smarter than her and if Leo wasn’t so blinded by the flippin’ eclipse her rack is causing, there is no way he would still be with her.” She said in a more hushed tone, but I could still hear her hear her antagonism.

I wanted to roll my eyes right at this moment but Jaz looked like a tiger ready to pounce and not in a sexual way; more the human-tastes-like-chicken kind of way, so instead I just sighed.

“Maybe,” I said turning to look around the café, hoping that no one was staring.

Jaz shook her head, “Not maybe. It’s true and you know it.” She got up, sticking her headphones in her ears and left without saying another word. I took a sip of the coffee she left behind and eventually walked out.
