You yawned, buttoning up your shirt as you swung your legs out of bed.
You stretched, popping your neck with a grunt.
You slid on a pair of house shoes, shuffling towards the living room, expecting to have to find your own entertainment today.
Pythor had been out for the last week or so addressing property restrictions with the other Generals so his presence had been scarce in your life. You spent most of your free time in the library (though it was unimpressive after spending a day in Pythor’s archives), or roaming with Lloyd and Junior.
That was a fairly volatile combination, diminished in dangerousness by fear of Selma’s authority.
You paused as you entered the sitting area, pondering at Pythor’s closed door. He only kept it that way when he was here, sleeping, or working on papers, and the sun was far too high in the sky for his usual early tendencies.
You perked up a little, even at the oddness of it.
You walked over and rapped on the door softly, “Pythor?”
No response.
You shifted your weight from foot to foot, and glanced both ways, hand lifting timidly to the knob. It twitched and stuck, locked.
Well you at least knew he was here, but why was he locked in?
“Pythor?” you called louder, grew more curious in the silence.
You turned and walked out of the room, out into the hallway. You roamed, trying to find someone to seek an explanation in.
You found Skales slithering up the main stairwell of the palace with a massive stack of paperwork in his harms.
“Do you know where Pythor is?” you asked.
“Hisss room, I guesss?” Skales shrugged, “He took a day off.”
“He took a day off?” you raised an eyebrow, “That’s the most un-Pythor thing I’ve ever heard. What do you mean ‘took a day off’?”
Skalidor slithered into view after Skales, a similar stack of papers in his hands, but he struggled with it significantly less than Skales.
“Took a day off, assss in, being a bum and not working,” Skales slithered onto your floor.
“Why? Is something wrong with him?” you looked back down the hall.
“How am I sssupossed to know? He’sss a big boy, he can take care of himssself.” Skales shrugged again.
“No I see him more as the person that would die from a stab wound because he wouldn’t want to inconvenience anyone,” you crossed your arms.
“No happy endings, we did like men,” Skalidor rumbled, shifting his paperwork into one arm effortlessly.
“Where is the attorney’sss office, again?” Skales panted, hands scrabbling on on his books.
“On the third floor,” Skalidor said simply.
“Then what the kyrd am I doing up here!? Why did you let me go all the way up here!?”
“You acted confident in what you were doing,” Skalidor said with a sharp nod.
Skales dropped his papers onto the Constrictai’s stack with a screeching groan, “There, you’re carrying them down there, now.”
“Alright, but only out of pity,” Skalidor rumbled with a smug grin.
Skales grumbled something back and they slithered off down the stairs bickering.
