Day Two

Thursday

"Today, we will be having a surprise quiz!", our Literature teacher announced with a bright grin on her face. Her announcement was followed by groans and complaints.

"But miss..!", a student complained out loud. "You didn't tell us to study!"

"Exactly what a surprise quiz is about! But you are students. It's your job to study! And it's not my fault if you fail the exam today. And if you do, it only means you're not really devoting your hearts to my everyday lectures. Oh, the very fact hurts my heart!", she theatrically places her fingers on her forehead and leans on the teacher's podium. I slightly grinned to myself. I wonder how she can keep on being so enthusiastic.

"I have prepared the questionnaires so answer as honestly and best as you can and dare not leave any item unanswered". She begins distributing the test papers.

As I received the paper, I scanned over it and realized it had thirty items on it. Every single items was under multiple choice. This is gonna be easy.

"You are given only twenty minutes to answer. After which, we will check it together and see the areas which you need to improve on". She looks at her watch, "You may begin now".

I finished answering the exam before the given time ended. I put my pen down and crosed my arms over my chest as I leaned my back against my seat. Scanning among the students who were still answering their own papers, I came across the sight of Isaac leaning his head against his hand as he stared outside the window directly to his left. The room's air-conditioner was left unused so the windows were open - leaving the wind to freely brush against his skin. He suddenly darted his eyes towards me so I swiftly looked away and kept my head down. I grinned to myself, suppressing a laugh, while thinking, 'What the heck? I'm acting like some girl who has a crush on him', or something like that.

"Alright, time's up. Pass your papers". The students groaned and sighed either in relief or in surrender as they passed their papers to the front. The teacher took the piled papers from the front and shuffled them. After which, she distributes the papers and declared the answers while we correct the papers.

"Ok, that's it", the teacher puts her answer sheet on her table. "Who got the highest score?"

Two students raised their hands, a boy and a girl.

"Two students?", she mused. "Please stand, both of you, and state the name of the paper's owner and the corresponding score. We'll begin with you", she points to the guy who, in turn, raises the paper to his face and reads, "Isaac Pierre".

Heads start to turn and mouths start to gossip.

"Isaac Pierre got a perfect mark", the guy finishes, sending a wave of gasps among the students.

"Good job, Isaac. You have made my eyes teary of joy!", she claps her hands. "And the other one is?"

The other person, a girl, read, "Aaron Godfrey".

"And his score is?"

"He and Isaac only have a one-point difference. Aaron got a twenty-nine", the girl finishes and sits down. My jaw dropped. Not this one, too. People started to praise Isaac and gives him consecutive pats in the back.

"Well, that's a surprise!", the teacher said. "Seems like you've found your match, Aaron". I looked at her upon realizing she had casted her eyes on me with an underlying intent of a challenge.

"Seems so, ma'am", I faked a smile.
