IT RAINS EXCESSIVELY IN AVONLEA FOR A MULTITUDE OF DAYS, and this somber Tuesday morn bares no dissimilarity to the ones before. The day is tranquil and the roads are left merely untouched, glossed over with inch-deep puddles as the cement soaks it in. Dreary clouds swirl across the heavens, hindering the sun from villagers. Down on the ground, Kathleen Beauvais and Eliza Blythe heedfully sweep through pages of countless hardbacks in the building of Avonlea's only library.

"We should perhaps be on our way, Kathleen," Eliza sighs downheartedly. Her milky brown eyes dart in the direction of the grandfather clock in the corner of the room. "School is to start soon."

"But we shouldn't give up, there must be something that will alleviate your father's illness. There must be," Kathleen urges rather optimistically. However, the younger girl proceeds to stack the books together and place them back on the shelf.

"There's nothing we can do to save him; not me, nor Gilbert. But I believe the doctor will find a way. So for now, we must leave it to him. I truly do apologise for wasting your time," the girl frowns in dismay. The orphan shakes her head in disagreement, before closing the final book on the table.

"This is not a waste of my time. I adore reading, and of course I'd do anything if it would do you any help with him," Kathleen replies, giving her a soft smile. "If you insist, however, we may go."

Eliza, much like her new-found friend and her brother, was also an intellectual being, who values knowledge over appearance in everything. Her intelligence was superior conpared to any other twelve-year-old in Avonlea.

The pair of girls had decided the day before to visit the library, in hopes that they would possibly encounter an effective cure for the man who'd been bedridden since the beginning of the year. Much to Kathleen's surprise, the mysterious jars she'd seen Miles give to the Blythe siblings on her first night, possessed only medicine contents to aid in the old man's incureable sickness.

"It's been over week, you know," Eliza starts. They trudge onwards through damp, slender footpaths- boots treading over mud-caked pools of water. "You haven't forgiven him yet?" Kathleen chuckles, instantly comprehending the unnamed center of the conversation.

"No," she simply replies. After the event that occured on her first day, Kathleen solemnly swore that she would refuse to ever acknowledge Gilbert Blythe's presence. She'd never forgive the boy for his foolhardy comment. "And for Ruby, I shouldn't."

"Ruby Gillis? What has she got to do with it?" Eliza scrunches up her nose, which is tinted cerise in the absurd cold of the spring.
