Adrien knocked quickly on the Chloé's bedroom door. Her faint voice echoed quietly in the large house. She opened the door and he saw her eyes widen as they registered him.
"How'd you get in here?" She slightly narrowed her eyes at him. One hand rested on her hip and it almost seemed like she was scolding him. She wore fuzzy pants with little bees on them but she was still scared him.
"Your butler let me in," He stuttered out. Adrien cleared his throat and she seemed to relax a little.
"Seems like they'll let anyone in nowadays," Chloé teased. "What is it that you want Adrien?" There was no malice in her voice but a small and hidden concern. He didn't like it that much.
"Uh... I just am I here to bring you... I mean..." It was like the words wouldn't come out. She rose a perfectly manicured eyebrow at him. He sighed and presented her the envelope. "This is for you."
Chloé looked at the paper in shock. "If this a confession you're two years too late. I'm happy with Nathanaël and we're going off to college soon and I am not interested in you anymore–" She spoke so rapidly and moved to close the door on him that he jumped. Adrien shoved his foot in the small space between the doorframe and the door. He winced in pain as the door hit him. "Adrien!" Chloé gasped and flung the door open so it wouldn't hurt him. "I am so sorry!"
He waved away her apology. "This letter is from Marinette." Chloé froze for a moment like she couldn't quite believe the words that spewed past his lips. The young woman met his eyes for a long moment before finally reaching out. She took the white envelope with unsure hands and trembling fingers. Chloé's eyes filled with tears as she read over the words and the silence that coated the two was overbearing. It was finally broken by a soft sob from the blonde girl.
"She was right... I did just have to wait." Chloé laughed a little and wiped at her eyes. Adrien smiled sadly, he didn't know what she meant but he could only guess.
"You love him, don't you?" Adrien looked at her. She seemed so different now, kinder and more approachable. "Nathanaël I mean. You're in love with him." Adrien stated.
"Yeah." Chloé sadly smiled. "I was waiting for you... When you didn't want me I thought I was unlovable." The young woman breathed out sadly. "When I used to visit Marinette Nathanaël would sometimes stop by... We just got talking and it was like... Well, it was like taking a breath of fresh air after drowning for so long. He didn't see me as the mayor's daughter. He saw me as Chloé." She wiped a few stray tears from her cheeks. "Marinette was right." She repeated and hugged the letter to her chest. Her soft cried reverberated on the walls.
Adrien wasn't sure what to do or say to console her. He shifted uncomfortably. Chloé looked at him and then down at the letter again. It was like she suddenly realized something about the letter that she hasn't before reading it. "Her handwriting isn't shaky," Chloé stated. He was confused so she went on to elaborate. "Marinette's handwriting isn't shaky. The last few months she could hardly hold a pen. She must have written this before she got bad..." Adrien felt his chest tighten. She wrote all the letters months before her death.
Somehow that made it so much worse. Somehow that made it sadder.
Adrien took a deep breath because he wasn't sure if he was breathing right. Chloé let him as she gripped her letter. He tried to look everywhere but the letter. His green eyes fell on packed suitcases on her bed and clothes all over the floor. She noticed this and greeted him for the second time with a sad smile. "I'll be leaving soon... Nathanaël and I are going to explore the campus and find an apartment." He nodded but he wasn't sure why that simple fact made him sad. Maybe it was because she would be gone. "Let's keep in touch," Chloé rushed out. "I know things are hectic but I don't ever want to lose you as a friend. Losing one friend is far more than enough. I can't lose you too." Her blue eyes reminded him of Marinette's. He was taken back for a moment.
The blond male nodded. "Yeah, I would like that a lot." Adrien struggled to get out. He wasn't sure why the sadness weighed so heavily on him. The young male wasn't sure why he was crying. Chloé pulled him into her and held him as he cried. She rubbed small soothing circles into his shoulder and back.
He supposed because after he was gone she wouldn't be able to reach him, to stay in touch with him. Adrien supposed it was because with the way he was feeling Chloé was bound to lose him too.
