Chapter 6After so many times and months fretting about going out and getting to kill some of the undead, I didn't expect it to be so boring and dull. Certainly not after so many days in.
Since they first took us here in the middle of the woods by a really bumpy and long car ride, I had yet to see anything living really. And not just people, we barely saw any rabbits either. It's like all the living things knew to avoid this side of forests. Like they knew something was lurking here.
As expected, as soon as our ride left and we became alone, Zack took the leading role. Ever since five days ago, he's been bossing us around like little children. I was suprised that even Harry, the big scary one, listened to him.
Now, as the night came closer again, I was trying to put up a tent. And failing massively. It was not my fault, I was given a wrong tent. So the little freaking bits didn't sit together. And even worse, this was my first time doing it. It just wasn't my best day.
"Having troubles? Still?" Came a sizzlingly annoying voice behind me. "I mean really, after so many nights outside, I thought you were finally getting the hang of it."
"Not tonight, Layden," I said. "Give me a break."
"One day you're gonna warm up to me, love," this was his favourite line since coming here. It was getting on my nerves.
"Or never, you piece of shit," I murmured. "Are you gonna help me or you're just going to stand there ogling me all day?"
I looked up to him as he smirked his lopsided smile. "You know what? I'm good with the ogling, thank you very much."
When I glared at him, he smirked again before calling: "Hey, Mason! Come help the lady with the tent."
I shook my head. He was too far up his ass to do it himself.
Mason came from around a corner with a smile on his face. Him and I warmed up to each other during the first two days. Even though he looked kinda scary, he was really sweet and was by my side all the time.
"Need help?" he said as he stopped in front of me and took a look at my masterpiece.
"A little," I admitted.
He laughed. "You know, one of these days, you are gonna have to learn how to build a tent. It can be very useful."
"Oh shut up," I said playfully as he began to set to work.
...
I lay in my tent later in the evening with nothing to do so I decided to read a book. I know it's not the best thing to do when you're on a mission with lots of undead running around waiting to jump at you, but I was bored and there were still a few hours left before midnight. And Zack was keeping watch so I was feeling somewhat secure.
I was on the third page of my book with my trusty battery lamp on when I heard a noise from the outside. It was proper rustling of the leaves, twigs snapping under feet like in horror movies. I was on my feet with a gun in my hand in a second.
I slowly crept out of my tent aiming the pistol at all sides although I saw next to nothing. It was almost completely dark outside with a little light creeping around the horizon. I saw no one out so I figured everyone went to bed early. But even Zack wasn't here and he was supposed to be on guard.
I turned in a slow circle trying to find the source of that noise. In the corner of my vision I saw a movement. I quickly aimed my gun in that direction a took a double take.
Zack was matching my position with a fear in his eyes. After a little pause we both lowered our guns at the same time.
"Go back to bed," he ordered.
