Chapter 7
They came running up the hill right towards our hiding place. We had no choice but to face them since running wouldn't help because they are just too quick. And strangely smart. I didn't like that.
I picked up my gun and started firing as soon as I saw them come close. Others were already fighting them too.
In the base we learned that the quickest way to put them down was to aim at their heads. Injuries in other places could hurt them and potentially stop them but only headshots killed them. Which was what we wanted here.
Zack came up beside me. "Try not to waste too much ammo on them, we're gonna need it later."
I noticed he had a machete in his hand. I had one on me too but wanted to spare it for necessary hand-to-hand combat with these things. If it ever came to that.
One of the zombies started towards Zack just then and he didn't see it. So I aimed my gun at its head and fired. Zack flinched and looked down at the damage. It was a clean headshot. He looked up to me and said, "Nice."
I just looked away and picked up my gun again. I killed zombie after zombie, I couldn't even keep count.
"Hey! A little help here," someone shouted from my left. It was Eric and he had a zombie on top of him. He was trynna get it off.
"Shit," I said and ran towards him with my machete out. Right before I could swing it though, the thing bit into his arm.
"Aaaagh!!" he screamed. I swang with my machete right at its skull with a full speed. It made a disgusting sound and the thing toppled to the ground dead.
I turned to Eric who was clutching his arm in pain. I looked at Zack at my side with wide eyes.
"Now what?" I said. He just shook his head with panic in his eyes.
This was something that we wanted to avoid at all costs. Anybody from the mission turning. This wasn't good.
As I looked around I noticed that there weren't that many zombies left which was a good sign. I couldn't deal with any more of them today.
I watched as Aiden killed the last one then looked around for more. He probably wanted to get his anger out for what I did to him. I had a feeling I gotta watch out from now on. He'll surely get his revenge somehow.
"We have to move our camp," said Zack. "They had to hear us from miles away."
"And you're sure he's alright with that?" I said and nodded my chin at a crying Eric.
"Oh stop with the bitching already," said Aiden from behind me. "We cannot let ourselves get killed just because he has a boo boo."
I turned to him. "You know what happens when a zombie bites you? You turn into a zombie. And it will happen quicker if we don't let him rest."
"So we kill him," he shot back. "Problem solved."
"And how about I kill you instead?"
He took a step towards me. "I'd love to see you try."
Zack then stepped between us with his hands out. "Alright, alright, back off. Both of you. You constantly fight like a married couple. Stop that. We are gonna stay here for the night just for Eric's sake. We will have to double the night shifts. But after that, we're gone."
I nodded, my eyes glued to Aiden's. "I'm fine with that."
He just scoffed and turned to go back to camp after others who started leaving too.
