Chapter 2

I reloaded my gun again and aimed it at the entrance of the next door. I didn't want to get shot again, even if last time it was just a scratch. But I was alert all the same and checking every possible hiding space for enemies.

I crouched down behind a table as I noticed movement in the opposite window. I slowly made my way to the wall and listened. He wasn't particularly silent with his steps so it was easy to make out when exactly he came to the window again.

I took my opportunity and jumped out of my hiding spot to hit him square in the jaw with my elbow. I landed on my two steady feet and as soon as my feet hit the ground, I aimed my pistol at his head.

He was still recovering from my hit and when he saw me, he dropped his weapon and put his hands up. He looked a little scared too, but I didn't trust him to stay still for long. I've been doing this a long time. So I aimed the gun lower and pulled the trigger.

The hit to the chest threw him away and he fell on the nearest table. I stayed to make sure he didn't get up and then I moved to my next spot.

The object I was supposed to take was in the master living room behind a TV. Or I was told it was. The guards could remove it for all I know.

I continued on with my silent steps as fast as I could. Time was running out. I didn't want any more distractions. But it was just a wishful thinking because as soon as I stepped into the corridor at the end of which was the living room, I was surrounded by at least four guards.

They had their weapons upon me but I quickly shot one right to the heart (or close to it) and dodged a bullet to my head. One of them caught me around my arms and tried to pull me to the ground but I acted fast.

I kicked my leg behind and caught him in the shin, causing him to release me. Then I turned around and punched him in the nose with a quick kick to the stomach. He stayed on the ground.

The third guard came upon me with balled fists and swung at my head but I stopped his hand with my own and headbutted him in the nose.

I turned around right as I saw a big metal pipe being lifted but I was too late. It caught me in my thigh and I cried out as I fell down. Sharp pain made its way through my body and I clenched my teeth. The guard who hit me crouched down behind me and grabbed me in a chokehold. I gagged and reached out to his eyes to blind him but he angled his head away. I hopelessly tried to find a way to get me out of his hold but it was no use. I started to see stars.

Then a ringing voice sounded and the guard immediately released me. I gulped down air and looked around. On a platform above us I saw my trainer standing there and looking at me. I rubbed my throat and stood up.

"Nice, but you lack one skill.. watchfullness," he said as he made his way down. "You got to pay attention to everything around you. Not just what's in front of you. As soon as you finish one task, maybe even before finishing it, you have to watch out for the other task. You're not perfect yet."

"I didn't know I have to be," I murmured.

I didn't like this guy. He's been my personal trainer for almost three weeks now and it's been a pain in the ass. He always just wanted me to be the best in everything and excel in every test. As if being good in something wasn't enough.

"What was that?" he said as he stopped before me. "You're complaining? Out on the field the fight won't get stopped. You'd be dead by now. So remember that, okay?"

I looked at the ground in shame. I knew he was right, it was just too hard to admit it.

"Hey, look at me," he said. When I lifted my gaze, he said, "You gotta get better if you want to be on the first search out. The things out there don't have sympathies for little girls like you so you better do as I say. I know you don't like my tactics but one day you'll thank me. You'll see."
