1 WEEK LATER

DANNY

I hadn't gone to my parents for lunch like planned last weekend, I had stayed in the apartment messing around with Jorel. It felt strange coming up with lies and excuses as to why I hadn't come over or taken any of their calls. Ever since Jorel told me that my adopted dad had murdered my birth mum and pretty much kidnapped me I couldn't look at him the same way again.

I needed proof that it actually happened, I couldn't go off Jorel's word any longer in case he was wrong and had been lied to by my real dad and his gang. So I blew off hanging with Jorel today to do something productive and stop me from slowly losing my mind.

Walking into the library I find where the old news articles are kept and all but lock myself in the room not wanting to be spoken to while I was deep in thought. The back catalogue of news articles was very well organised and all it took was finding the 'LA Gang' file to narrow and help my search.

I was adopted when I was one so I had to go back to articles involving gangs and the Police a long time ago. Jorel said the gang unit raided one of Hollywood Undead's warehouses and lots of people lost their lives, my mum included. I find several articles documenting the raid and the results, of course, the media played down the amount of death because it might make the Police look bad.

One article showed my adopted dad walking onto the street holding a small bundle of blankets in his arms. Was that me? He had blood on him, but no blood on the blankets. He wore the same determined facial expression I'd grown up with. Nowhere did it mention my mum's death specifically, but there were rumours that some women lost their lives along with a bunch of men.

So the night really happened, Jorel didn't lie to me. And now I had some harsh questions for my adopted dad which I wanted answers to. I wasn't going to let him brush me aside anymore, I was old enough to know the truth.

"Thought I might find you here Danny, why are you here?"

Jorel comes up behind me and wraps his arms around me, resting his chin on top of my head. I sigh loudly and lean back in the chair, happy that he had followed me here.

"I found articles about the raid and there's a photo of what could very well be me wrapped in blankets. But nowhere does it say that my mum got killed by the Police."

"Are you going to confront him?" Jorel asks concern lacing his voice.

I nod, "I need the truth. Do you think you can come, but maybe not come inside? I don't want to do this alone."

Jorel chuckles, "ashamed of me are you Daniel? Fine, I'll stay outside in the car. But if twenty minutes pass and I hear nothing from you then I'm coming in."

That sounded fair enough.

~Time Skip~

"Remember twenty minutes then I'm coming inside."

Jorel leans over the divide and pecks me on the lips. I kiss him back, his kiss giving me courage.

I get out of the car and walk up the drive with confidence in my steps. The living room curtains flutter meaning mum already knew I was here. I take a deep breath and climb the steps up to the front door which opens. Mum runs out and throws her arms around me.

"Oh my god Danny I thought something had happened to you. Why have you been ignoring us, Danny?"

I hug her back, "sorry mum, I guess my life has gotten busier recently."

She shuffles the two of us inside and closes the front door. Dad emerges from the living room with his arms folded over his chest.

"Well look what the cat dragged in. Come here, Danny."

Dad pulls me out of mums embrace and all but smothers me. I fake a smile and hug him back.

"Hi dad, sorry for being distant. But I came over to talk to you in private if that's okay."

He pulls back, "why don't we talk in the study."

I follow after him to the office I knew so well. I lean against the door not wanting to stay in the same room with him too long while he sits down behind the desk.

"What do you want to talk about son?"

I look at the floor, "I want answers about the night I was adopted, or should I say kidnapped."

"Excuse me, Son."

I look up directly into his eyes, "I know that you raided a gang called Hollywood Undead, I saw the news article with you holding a bundle of blankets. I'm old enough to know the truth."

He stands up fists clenched and I take two steps back, "I won't have you talking about that night Daniel. I saved you from drug dealers and gave you a nice normal life."

I shake my head, "did you take me from my birth mum? Did you kill her while she still clutched onto me?"

"Who's been filling your head with these lies Daniel?" he questions.

I mirror him and clench my fists, "dad, please just tell me the truth I can handle it."

He walks around the desk watching me cautiously, "yes, your birth parents were a part of the infamous Hollywood Undead gang Danny. And yes I did take you to give you a better life, that doesn't make me a bad guy."

He wasn't outright admitting to murder, then again mum was only in the other room and he probably didn't want her knowing his dirty little secret.

"Thank you for semi admitting the truth, but I think I need some time alone to think all of this over dad."

Dad sighs in defeat, "take as much time as you need son. Promise me one thing Daniel, promise me you won't run into a life you know anything about. Can you do that for me?"

"I will think things over dad, now I'm going to leave."

He doesn't try to stop me as I leave the office, instead, he goes back to sitting behind the desk as if the conversation between us hadn't taken place.

"Are you leaving already Danny?"

Mum pops up in front of me and I feel bad that I was going to just show up, talk to dad, and then leave again.

"Afraid so mum, sorry."

I hug her and she sighs loudly before hugging me back, "does it have something to do with the guy waiting in your car?"

"Yes, it does. Mum I really like him."

Mum laughs, "finally, I'm so happy for you Danny. Does he treat you right?"

I pull away, "we haven't known each other that long mum, and we don't have a title yet."

"Well show him whose boss, Danny. Now go and have some fun."

She opens the front door and I walk out feeling better than when I walked in earlier.

Jorel leans out of the passenger window lighting up a cigarette, "I thought I was going to have to come in there."

"He didn't outright say he killed her, but he did admit to taking me from Hollywood Undead because he wanted to give me a better life."

Jorel snorts, "That sounds weak. Now shall we have some fun?"

I get into the car and immediately lean over and smash my lips down on Jorel's. He laughs against my lips, taking that as a yes to his question.
