Stefan, Elena and I sat in the library as Elijah explained, "Tonight is the full moon. We should assume that Klaus is prepared to break the curse."
"Elena said the Sun and the Moon curse is fake," Stefan said. "That it's just actually a curse placed on Klaus."
"Klaus is a vampire born of a werewolf bloodline. The curse has kept his werewolf aspect from manifesting. But if he breaks it, he'll be a true hybrid."
"Then why are we letting him break the curse?" Damon demanded as he walked in. "We can kill him today. With Bonnie."
"Damon . . ." Stefan trailed off.
"No," Elena said. "Bonnie can't use that much power without dying."
"I'll write her a great eulogy," Damon told her.
"It's not an option, Damon."
"All right, how do we break this curse?" Stefan asked.
"Well, the ritual itself is relatively straightforward," Elijah told us. "The ingrediants, so to speak, you already know."
"The moonstone," I said.
"A witch will channel the power of the full moon to release the spell that's bound within the stone. After that, Klaus, being both werewolf and vampire, will sacrifice one of each."
"And where do I fit into it?" Elena asked.
"The final part of the ritual," Elijah answered, reaching for a box on the shelf. "Klaus must drink the blood of the Doppelganger . . . to the point of your death."
Stefan took Elena's hand in his as she looked at Elijah, who opened the box and took out a jar. "And that's where you come in."
"This is an elixir that I acquired some 500 years ago for Katerina. It possesses mysticl properties of resuscitation."
"So I'll be dead?"
"And then you won't."
"That's your plan?" I asked skeptically. "A magical witch potion with no expiration date?"
Damon looked at Elena. "You want to come back to life, what about John's ring?"
"Those rings only work on humans," Elijah said. "The Doppelganger's a supernatural occurance. Odds are, the ring won't work."
"I'll take those odds over your elixir. What if it doesn't work, Elena?"
"Then I guess I'll just be dead," Elena said.
Damon looked at Stefan and me. Stefan looked down sadly. I just shrugged. Damon looked at Elijah before leaving.
"Do we know if Klaus has everything he needs to do this?" I asked. "Does he have a werewolf?"
"Klaus has been waiting to break this curse for over a thousand years," Elijah told us. "If he doesn't already have a werewolf, my guess is by tonight, he will."
Damon was outside when I walked outside, Damon drinking Scotch as I stood next to him. "Breakfast of champions, huh?"
"I'm surrounded by idiots," Damon said. "I need all the help I can get. Especially when the biggest idiot of them all is our brother."
"Who's standing right behind you, so he heard that," Stefan said.
"That's sort of the point."
"You know, neither of you are helping."
"Elijah is an Original vampire, Stefan," I said. "One we tried to kill. You're going to believe this guy?"
