Positive. Negative. Positive. Positive. Four tests and mixed results, Zach was overwhelmed. She had been in the bathroom for hours. Zach would go from a cry to a panic and was now finally calm again.
Little did she know, her brother listened. Kyler sat outside of the bathroom, paying as much attention as he could. It broke his heart to hear his little sister cry and gasp, even clumsily tripping on everything as she over-worried about her future.
Finally, she stopped pacing for a moment. The girl was tired, all she wanted was an answer. How hard was that? Apparently, it was much more difficult than she assumed.
Finally deciding to leave so she could clear her head, as soon as she started to open the door, Kyler quickly stood up, meeting his sister's sad face just in time. As he opened his arms, his sister stepped up to him, the two joining in each other's embrace.
It felt like it was so long ago that he held his little sister so close to him. Now, they both feared for her future. He only heard her panic-whispers through the door, but that was just enough to understand the situation.
Finally, Zach broke the silence between the two, "Do you think you can take me to the hospital?" The older nodded with a small sigh as the two pulled away. As the two headed down the hall, Kyler followed after Zach with a hand kept to her.
At moments like this, he wanted to be the big protective brother that made her feel safe, sometimes, though, he just couldn't manage to do that.
"Do you think you're having a baby?" he asked. While Zach frantically went back and forth to get her shoes and then a jacket, Kyler got the keys to his car and then put his shoes on.
Zach hesitantly nodded her head.
For a moment, they were silent. As they walked out of the house, Kyler locked the door behind them, and then followed Zach towards his car. While she climbed into the passenger's side, Kyler got into the driver's side and started the vehicle.
"I can promise you I am."
He sunk back into the seat, looking over at his sister. He was unsure if she would want a baby, but she couldn't turn down a child with ease.
"Do you still want to go?"
Zach covered her face as she shook her head. Kyler only watched, he didn't know what to do in this scenario.
The older sibling then sat up to turn to his sibling. "Are you sure you don't want to go? You seemed ready a few seconds ago. I just want to know what you want, bud"
Her hands fell into her lap again. Zach wanted to turn to her brother for a hug or to burst into tears, she kept from doing both."I don't think there's a point to it," she shrugged, "unless I want to check on the baby."
"Keeping the baby? Like, don't want to think about it more?"
Zach shook her head; she was tired of thinking. She sat back into the seat as she finally looked at him; Kyler looked panicked compared to her.
"I don't think so. I've known for a while, too late to do anything now. Do you think Bry is going to try changing my mind?"
Kyler shrugged; she was already overthinking things.
"How do you feel about it?" Even she didn't know. "Can I ask about the father?" The mentioning of Luke made Zach freeze, this would be worse on him. "Zachary." Still nothing. "Would you rather talk to Bryson about it?"
Suddenly she had something to say. "I don't think you guys will like him that much. I don't even know if he will want to do anything; he's very nice, though, so I think he will. He would be a great father, that's a good thing."
All he wanted to know was a name, but instead, his sister was now gushing about some guy. At least she still liked him. "Is he a good guy? Are you dating?"
As Zach crossed her legs in the seat, Kyler did the same. They now turned to face each other; the two could have gone back inside, but the conversation would probably drop if they did.
"We're kind of dating," her voice showed a bit of confusion, "and he's definitely a good guy. The problem is that apparently, he's only bad at remembering protection."
"I mean... I guess everyone is bad at something. Usually, it's just like English, math, or science-"
He stopped as soon as his sister laughed- he now learned that the father of his sister's baby was book smart. "He doesn't really like science, but he's amazing in English."
"Good grades?"
"Are these really the questions you have to ask?"
Kyler rolled his eyes, he knew Zach wouldn't answer any relevant questions. "Would you rather me ask the shit Bryson would?"
"Will he be mad at me?"
"Probably."
