a light sparked in the dark room as i lit a newly bought scented candle. i hovered my face close to the flame, inhaling the wax’s scent, a sigh of relief escaping me as i then took my face away from the candle. i twirled a strand of brunette hair in my slim finger before shifting around my bed. i finally removed myself from my comfortable furniture and found my way over to the window. peering out, light beaming rays into my dark room.

the door knob to my humble-abode rustled before my door swung open. i jumped and spun around, my tired looking mother standing in the doorway.

“turn on some  lights in here,” she hissed and I noticed her figure moving toward the closest light switch.  i jutted forward and grabbed her hand.

“no, please? i-I don’t want my room getting hot,” i stuttered gesturing to the mini fan which was perched strategically on the edge of my end table. she sighed and jerked her hand out of my grasp, shaking her head disapprovingly. before pushing a strand of her light brunette hair behind her ear, glasses sat on the tip of her long nose.

“atleast go outside for a little and i don’t know take a walk or something,” she growled before backing out of my bedroom doorframe and shutting the door. "go do what kids do" i heard her voice speak from behind to closed door.

i huffed, going outside for a little would probably be good for me. although i didn’t enjoy being in the hot sydney sun, although inhaling all of these scented candles for the rest of the day might seem relaxing, but not very healthy.

i removed myself from my sleepwear and in to something fit to go outside in. i pulled a pack of cigarettes from my beneath my clothes in my dresser and headed out of my room. wincing at the light that peered in from outside. my mom pulled together a strained smile as i passed her and went out the front door.  pulling the pack of cigarettes from my jacket  as well as the lighter that sat in the nearly empty box .

I lit the cigarette and took a drag before having it rest between my index finger and middle finger. walking around the general area i called my ‘home’ before making my way to downtown. i rested up against a brick building, the shade was reassuring and relaxing, it shielded me from the beating sun.

i closed my eyes and took one of the last drags from my cigarette, dropping my arm down beside me and blowing out the captured smoke. i looked down at my bud of a cigarette and sighed as i was forced to finish it.

i was about to throw the bud to the ground and and pull out another one. a voice erupted from beside me, causing my head to jerk up and spook me.

you know those aren’t good for you”
