The sun was now high in the sky as both parties decided to claim different parts of the city to place their camp. The Americans have started to put their hired workers to start digging. They took the first thing seen, the door toward the front of the city. The smaller group went further in, and chose the spot in front of the statue that saved Rick's life.
"Lazy bastards," Zia said under her breath.
"Zia, watch your language," Evy scolded her, making sure they didn't hear her.
"Darn it, she heard it," Zia said only for Evy to retort, "I heard that." They continued the tasks they were up to at the time. Evy was trying to fix an ancient Egyptian trick will mirrors and light. Zia was setting up the last bits of their camps, putting everything in place for when it got dark. Rick was tying a rope around a pillar, hitting the warden in the process.
"Aah!" the warden cried out in surprise. Rick then hit him twice more in spite as the warden looked at him with the face that said, "what the heck?".
"Do they know somethin' we don't," asked the blond American seeing the group set up further back. While the group was in the back they were unaware the Zia had snuck away to spy on the Americans. She may or may not have been sneaking around their camp....for good reasons of course.
"They are led by a woman. What does a woman know?" said the Egyptianologist with a tone of certainty. Oh how Zia wanted to punch him so badly, so instead she took the high road, she stole one of the tools from the camp. She quickly made her way back, trying to get to Rick.
"Hey Rick," Zia said getting Rick's attention.
"Hey kid. Watch got there?" he said looking at the object in her hands. "Where did you get that," he said giving her the strict eyes.
"A little something from the American camp that you can give as a gift to my dear mum," she said with a mischievous smile.
"You haven't answered the question young lady," he said with that stern tone.
"Cause you don't need to know," she said a little to quickly. "But what you do need to know is that you can't call me a kid. I am a young adult."
"Until you can say you are 18 I'm calling you kid. Ya got that?" he said sternly.
"Yes sir," Zia said with glum. Even then Rick still took the tools to give to Evy, secretly Zia couldn't help do a little victory dance.
Walking over to the rest of the group she heard her mum say, "That's a statue of Anubis. Its legs go deep underground. According to Bembridge scholars, that's where we'll find a secret compartment containing the golden Book of Amun-Ra." She was still trying to get the mirrors to reflect the light of the sun.
"Jonathan, you're meant to catch the sun with that," Evy said. Zia then went over and helped him clean it more.
Deciding to sieze the moment Rick walked over to Evy with the "special gift" Zia got from the Americans. Awkwardly he asked, "So, uh, what are these old mirrors for?".
"Ancient mirrors. It's an ancient Egyptian trick. You'll see," Evy answered back.
Nodding as if understood he said, "Uh, here, this is for, uh, you." He then gave the leather wrapped tools to Evie.
"Like an awkward teenager," Zia said under her breath.
"Even I have better game," Jonathan said which made them both try to hide their laughter.
"Go ahead. It's something I borrowed off our American brethren. I thought you might like it-- you might need it for when you're, uh-- uh, yeah," he ranted before stopping himself. Thank Allah he didn't rat me out, Zia thought with a breath of relief.
