Tess

"Good morning," I mumbled as i entered the guestroom where Jermaine was sleeping with a cup of coffee for him. He groaned and rolled over before looking up at me. He wasn't a morning person, it always took a minute for him before he started talking.

I placed his cup on the table next to him and leaned in to peck him. He dodged my kiss.

"Morning breath," he said in his deep tired voice.

"I don't give a fuck," I responded and gave him a kiss anyway. "how'd you sleep?"

"I missed you," he looked over at the cup of coffee I made him, "keep doing shit like this and I'm gonna wife you--" he smirked.

"You're full of shit," I rolled my eyes. "my moms making breakfast and apparently you got plans with my dad and my brothers."

"Yeah he said some shit about going to play golf." he yawned.

"You ever played before?" I asked him, amused.

"Nah but I'll figure it out I guess..." his eyes roamed at my face then down to my chest, "whatchu got on under that robe?" he an eyebrow.

"My underwear..." I said before getting up and teasing him by pulling it up a little. He bit his lip and I laughed before leaning in to peck him. "My moms making breakfast I'm gonna go shower."

"Shit can I join you?" he was still staring at me.

"If you're ready to explain to my father what you're doing in the shower with me--"

"Uh yea I'll just see you downstairs," he chuckled and I headed out of his room. I ran into Trey in the hallway.

"What was you doing in Jermaine's room!?" he said loudly as we walked past my parents room.

"I swear I hate your ass," I smacked the back of his head and he grabbed my arm and twisted my arm. "OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" I yelled exaggerating.

"TREY." My mother yelled at him.

"I ain't do nothing-- damn--"

"Watch your mouth," my dad firmly reminded him and I stuck my tongue out at him before skipping back down the hall to my room.

--

After getting dressed I joined everyone downstairs for breakfast. My mom was fixing plates and my dad was sat down with his newspaper in hand. Trey, Damien (and his wife, Vanessa and their daughter Nova) were all sat around the kitchen table. I looked up and saw Jermaine helping my mom. I walked past him to the fridge to grab a glass of orange juice. "Good morninggg y'all," I grinned.

Jay smiled down at me and didn't say anything.

"Oh you done taking your hour long shower? Singing on the top of your lungs sounding like a dying cat--" Trey said and Damien laughed.

"Square up Trey you really getting on my nerves today--" I kissed my teeth before I sat down.

"Ya square up unca Twey!!!" Nova yelled as she bit into her pancakes.

When Jermaine was done he came and sat next to me and my dad prayed over the food before we all started eating. It was a couple days before thanksgiving so we were gonna just chill at home before the rest of the family was gonna be staying with us.

"Thanks Jermaine for helping with breakfast this morning... my own kids were useless--"

"Aye mama come on, I set the table." Damien chuckled. "Plus, I had to get Nova showered and dressed this morning."

"I had to throw the trash out," Trey shrugged and the entire table looked at me.

"What? I washed my hair... and look at my brows-- they're perfectly symmetrical." I smiled proudly.

"That's not fair you shouldn't have let him help by himself" my mom frowned and I felt Jay squeeze my leg.

"Nah I don't mind it, it's fine Tess is always cooking for me and stuff so--" he shrugged, "it's no big deal."

"She cooks for you at your place or...?" my dad asked her confused and I looked up at him and he swallowed hard as he remembered that I hadn't told my family the full truth  about our relationship.

"Um yeah," he cleared his throat. "when we first started dating she was always picky when we went to restaurants so she said she cooks better,"  he chuckled.

My dad sipped his tea and narrowed his eyes at him like he was trying to read him. Then, he nodded and didn't say anything else.

The rest of breakfast was loud, chaotic and a hot mess but that's how things usually go in this family. My brothers and dad were gonna head out with Jay for the day and my mom and I were gonna go shopping for a bit.

"Let me go get my bag mama I'll be right back," I said as I headed up the stairs and saw my dad standing there putting on his jacket.

"Tess," he said firmly as he looked at me.

"Yeah daddy?"

"Where'd you say y'all two met again?"

"At college... through mutual friends..." I frowned, confused at how he was asking me.

"And you been together how long?"

"Uh a year and a half--" I said. We'd been on and off but that wasn't his business.

"Something feels funny here... and I'm gonna get to the bottom of it,"  He said and I rolled my eyes and started walking up the stairs.

"You're doing the most... this is why I never bring boyfriends home between you and Trey and Damien you always tryna start something.

"I don't know why you're walking away like we're done talking." He looked up at me as I walked away.

"Well I'm done dad," I sighed.

"And I'm not... get your butt back down here I'm talking to you." he said in that strict voice, and I might be grown as hell but as soon as my father put that bass in his voice I'm not gonna lie I was a little shook so I walked back down the stairs and sighed before looking at him.

"You think your brothers and I do this to make your life hard? Huh?" he said and I blinked at him. "You've always been stubborn Tess," he shook his head at me. "I'm going to spend the day with this guy and figure him out and if I don't like him I'll let you know,"

"Yeah okay..." I mumbled. "if you make him uncomfortable or go overboard with your grilling just know we're not going to stay here,"

"Don't do this Tess, it's the holidays... you want to ruin something that's supposed to be a happy time."

"Nah dad that's all you... this is exactly why I never let y'all in on my shit." Frustrated, I headed up the stairs.

"Cuss in my house one more time Tess I dare you!" he yelled after me and I continued on into my room, slamming the door behind me. I stayed in my room until I heard them leave and pull off. I heard my phone buzz and smiled to myself when I saw Jermaine had texted me.
