Life at Michael's condo was starting to become normal. We've only been for a few days, but we were already falling into a routine. James would be left with me during the night and Michael would stay with me during the day while James was out doing his "super secret" stuff.
I was starting to go crazy being cramped up in this house though. Even with all the cool stuff in the condo, after a while it gets boring.
"Can we please go outside and do something?" I asked Michael for the millionth time.
He looked at me and gave a long, drawed out sigh. "Lizzie, for the seventeenth time, we can't leave the condo without risking you being seen."
"But I doubt there are any demons having lunch at a restaraunt in New York." I told him.
"It's not only demons we have to watch out for. You're supposed to be dead, remember?"
My mood immediately plummeted. "Come on Michael. Just a few minutes. I'm going crazy in here."
He shook his head, but didn't say anything else on the matter. I knew I was acting like a little kid, but you try being locked up inside for days on end. I finally got an idea. Why not just sneak out?
I waited for Michael to go to another room to do something, and that's when I bloted to the locked door. I quickly and quietly unlocked the three bolts on it and slipped outside. I looked both ways before jogging to the elevator. I quickly pushed floor one and the elevator doors closed.
I hardly felt sick at all because of all the adrenaline coursing through me. It may not seem like I was doing much for an adrenaline rush, but most people aren't nephilum with demons chasing after them. Not to mention the fact that I'm supposed to be dead. If anyone recognizes me, I don't know what I'll do.
I couldn't fret on it too long though, because seconds later, the elevator opened with a soft ding. I nodded stiffly to the man behind the desk and attempted to send him a friendly smile. It didn't really work.
The man gave me a suspicious glance, but otherwise didn't say anything. I smiled as a gentle breeze swept past me, taking my hair with it. People rushed by each other on the sidewalks. It was just like back home, just a little more people were here.
I breathed in the wonderful aromas around me. A couple blocks down bakery sat and my mouth couldn't help but water. I didn't have any money, but that wouldn't stop me from checking the place out. I made my way through the throng of people and stopped outside the little cafe.
I was just about to open the door when someone called out my name. "Lizzie?" Her voice was slightly breathless, like she couldn't believe what she was saying.
"Sam." I slowly turned around to make sure I wasn't hearing things. There she was. Her blue eyes wide and her glasses falling down her nose slightly. Her mouth was agape and she held a shopping bag in her arm. Her eyes raked over me, much like mine had raked over her.
"You're real." She finally said. I couldn't help the smile that graced my features. Before I knew it, her bag was flying to the ground and Sam was running towards me. We collided in a very tight embrace and for a moment, all I could think about was Sam's arms around me. I forgot about being a nephilum, about being wanted dead by demons, about everything that's happened in the last couple of weeks.
Tears escaped Sam's eyes and landed on my shirt, but I didn't care. My own tears were running down my face.
"You're alive." She kept repeating it under her breath until I pulled away from her. People were giving us weird looks, but I honestly didn't care. I had my best friend. That was all that mattered.
