His friends turned out to be a few angels that either owed him favors, or were old friends of his. The only exception was Sam and Devin. He let Sam help us because first off, she used to be an angel, second off, we were very short handed.
Luckily, Devin hasn't said anything to me. He didn't even look at me, and I didn't look at him.
Even as all the angels were grabbing stuff and getting ready for the inevitable battle that lay ahead of us, I could not stop running through everything that happened with my supposed father in my head. Was that really him? Did the angels actually know who he is? Would they ever tell me? Is there a way I can tell that he isn't lying for real? Am I going to turn evil like him? Sould I tell anybody about his voice?
After a while of internal debate, I decided it would be best if I don't tell anyone. They would either think I'm crazy or they would do something to where I couldn't hear him anymore. I don't know why, but the idea of someone cutting me off from my father that I just met terrified me. I mean, I just found him. Well, he found me, but that isn't the point.
"Lizzie, you ok?" I looked up sharply, startled out of my reverie.
"What? Yeah, I'm fine."
Sam stared at me with her eyebrow raised. She knew I was lying. She always knew when I was lying, and it worked both ways.
"So what is going on with you and James?" She asked, taking a seat beside me. The other angels were hurrying around, trying to get things ready for the battle. They were mainly helping James and Michael to make plans and passing those wicked looking blades to everyone.
I sighed, deciding to tell her the truth. "I honestly don't know. Devin kissed me, James is either a jerk or really nice, there's no in between, and Alex is missing. Not to mention my apparent father has been talking to me in my head and claims he is Lucifer." I only meant to tell her about how Devin kissed me, but once I started, I couldn't stop. She was my best friend, I just couldn't help telling her everything.
She looked shocked to say the least. "Devin kissed you? That Devin?" She pointed to Devin. "I warned you about James. And your father? He was talking in your head?"
I nodded for confirmation. She looked at the ground. "I thought I had a complicated life. So tell me everything that happened while you were gone; I've obviously missed a lot."
And I did. I told her everything. Starting from what happened at the library to where we are now. It all seemed so long ago. Really it was only about a month and a half ago.
"Woah." She said simply.
"Yeah. Remember that super hard history test we were terrified we would fail last month? I miss that."
"I don't know." She joked. "That history test was pretty hard."
I smiled, shaking my head. I missed this. I missed my friends; my human life. Not having to worry if I was going to die within the next hour.
"What are you smiling about?" Michael asked playfully as he sat between Sam and me. I rolled my eyes.
"Nothing. Why do you want to know?" I asked in the same playful manner.
"No reason. Hey, James wanted me to tell you that we're leaving in an hour."
"Ok, great. Then me and Sam should get ready, huh?"
A guilty look passed over his face. "About that, the thing is, he thinks it would be safer for you to stay here."
I looked at him, a look of disbelief etched onto my face. "You're kidding, right? I have to go. I'm the one who wanted to find Alex in the first place. He's my brother Michael." My voice was steadily rising.
When Michael didn't answer me, I turned my glare to Michael, who was a few yards away talking to some angels.
"James!" I screamed, getting up from my position on the couch.
He looked to me and arched an eyebrow, questioning why I'm mad.
"I am going to the fight wether you like it or not." I demanded, getting inches away from his face. I had to tell myself not to look into his eyes or they would make me forget that I'm mad at him.
He looked me directly in the eyes, all joking vanished from his expression. "No. You aren't. It's too dangerous and you don't know how to control your outbursts. You could accidentally hurt the angels."
I thought for a moment. What if I did accidentally hurt an angel? Or worse? What if I hurt Alex? Then I realized. I'm dangerous as it is. I can't control my outbursts, but I hang out with angels and even humans all the time.
"I'm going." My tone of my voice held no room for arguments.
"No, you aren't."
"Why?" I challenged him with a hard glare.
"I already told you." He somehow managed to look annoyed, confused, and flabbergasted at once.
"There's something more to it. You aren't telling me something. I know because if you really thought I was a threat, then I wouldn't be here right now. I'd probably be in some desert."
He rubbed his neck. I was really starting to rile him up. "Look Lizzy, the demons want you. I'm not doing this for you, I'm doing this for us. You're important. You could be the turning point of the war. If you went, we would literally be handing you to them."
Out of all the things he said, I lingered on the first part. He wasn't doing this for me. I would never admit it to someone in a million years, but when he said that, I couldn't help but feel hurt. I shook off the unwanted feeling and looked away. He had a point-they would be handing me over to them. But I had to save Alex.
"I understand that James, and that's why I'm going to make sure they don't take me. I'll be careful."
He looked at me and sighed heavily. "If I told you no, you'd come anyway, right?"
I nodded. He had no idea how right he was.
"Fine. But you do exactly as I tell you. If I say run, you run. If I say to turn in a circle while screaming lyrics to a song, you'll do it."
I laughed. His serious face as he said the last bit just set me off.
He rolled his eyes, then turned back to the angels. I just happened to look off to the right and locked eyes with Devin. I gulped. Before I could look away and walk off, he was heading toward me. I had to tell myself to breathe.
"Hey." He replied as soon as he was right in front of me.
"Hi." I managed to choke out.
"I wanted to apologize...for the kiss."
I nodded. "Apology accepted."
He smiled. "That's great. I hope it won't be weird between us."
"Nope, no weirdness. No weirdness at all."
I caught Sam's gaze in the corner of my eye and gave her a pleading look. She nodded and made her way over here.
Devin opened his mouth, about to say something when Sam walked over. "Hey, Michael needs to talk to you."
I nodded. "Sorry." I apologized half heartedly to Devin as I all but ran with Sam to the other side of the room.
"Thanks." I told her once we were out of Devins ear shot.
"No problem. You looked like you were about to cry."
I rolled my eyes. "I did not."
"Trust me you did." James said, waltzing over to where we were standing.
"Hey." I told him, looking back and forth between the two to see if they were going to try to kill each other.
"We're leaving in about two hours, so if you want to sleep, you better do it now."
I nodded. "Come on." I told Sam. I led her to my room and after a little bit of talking we fell asleep.
