The first in a long while it seems. In response to the following prompt.

The phone rings. The voice on the other end says, "We need you again," then hangs up.

Enjoy :).

"I thought we were done." I whisper. We need you again. Repeats in my mind. I look around. After so many years, why now? I feel my heart break at the thought of having to leave him behind. Why is this happening to me now?

"Amor, where are you?" He asks as he comes in.

I swallow and try to respond.

"There you are! Guess, what happened?"

"What?" I try to smile.

"We got the reservation!"

The wedding venue. Why now?

"They said we could go today to go see it and sign the reservation if we still want it. Can we go? You don't have work, right?"

I smile. My eyes filling with tears.

"What's wrong?" He says noticing them.

"No, nothing. I'm just so happy."

He smiles. "Me too." He kisses me. "Can we go?"

Should we go? I know they can show up at any minute. A tear slips.

"What's wrong?" He asks as he wipes it away.

I grab his hand and kiss his palm. He smiles. "Nothing and yes, we can go." I need to tell him.

He grins. "Thank you." He hugs me.

Why after so many years? He gives me one of those hugs that lets me know he is always there for me. He knows something is going on. He kisses me just below my ear and hugs me a bit tighter.

"Afterwards, I'm giving you a massage." He promises.

"Thank you."

"We'll be married in a year." He says.

"I can't wait."

"I can't wait to call you my husband."

"You can start practicing."

"I might. Now, let me give you the massage I promised you. I have the oil."

I shake my head.

"I need you to lie down."

"Are you going to take advantage of me?"

"Nope." He winks.

I laugh.

"I have something to tell you." I whisper.

"Only if you're ready."

"I have to."

"It'll be okay."

I feel his fingers running down my side waiting for me to continue. I close my eyes. "A long time ago I used to work with a secret group my family has been part a off for generations. I left it before we met. I never thought I would get called in. I wasn't supposed to. I handed it over to my brother..."

"But he's dead." He whispers.

I nod. "We took an oath. They are going to come for me at any moment." He places more pressure. "I'm sorry."

"It'll be okay."

"I don't want to leave you. I don't know for how long. It's all secretive."

"Can you tell me about it?"

I turn to look at him. I'm met with curiosity, but also sadness. I pull him closer. "They have been dangerous endeavours, some of them. I have kept this part of my life from you. I don't want you to change your mind about me."

"I won't. You're stuck with me, Amor."

"I don't want to leave you. They could come at any time and I don't know for how long I will be gone."

"I'll wait for you."

"I won't be able to communicate with you."

He tries to smile. He swallows.

"I love you." I say.

"I love you too."

"I'm sorry."

He squeezes me in a hug.

I should have never kept this from him. I took his choice away.
